As the remnants of Irene move into Quebec and Newfoundland, Canada, widespread major flooding continues over sections of the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and northern New England.

As of 5 a.m., the storm, with maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour, was centered about 100 miles northwest of Houlton, Maine, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Some areas along the East Coast reported as much as 15 inches of rain from Irene, with North Carolina recording the heaviest rainfall amounts.

The tropics continue to remain active, with Tropical Storm Jose located about 340 miles north of Bermuda. The storm, with maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour, is projected to stay well off the coast and lose tropical characteristics later today.
