A Wide Range Of Possibilities

Published in the June 2013 Issue June 2013

It almost goes without saying, but buying the right outboard for your pontoon or deck boat can be undeniably frustrating. While you have time to test engines, it can be almost too much to handle. You've done some research and still you're left scratching your head. Fortunately, there is an easy way to go about this. Whether you're looking for the right horsepower, or you're just looking for something dependable and rugged, Suzuki may have exactly what you're looking for. From the fuel efficient and lightweight DF15A, to the hulking power of the DF300AP, Suzuki has the consumer in mind and offers a wide range of possibilities for any boater out there looking for a dependable and powerful outboard.

DF20A/DF15A

Don't be fooled by its size. Coming in at just under 50 pounds, the Suzuki DF20A and DF15A may look like they lack in power, but the in-line two-cylinder, four-stroke set in these outboards will surprise even the toughest critic. With their battery-less electronic fuel injection and Lean Burn Control technology, these outboards bring more than enough performance to the table. The engines’ electronic control module (ECM) allows for smooth, quick and consistent starting without the aid of an auxiliary battery, so there's no pesky battery taking up room on the transom. Whether you want a peaceful cruise on the water, or you're trying to sneak up on that trophy catch, these tiller-steered engines will give you the power you're aching for.

DF115A/DF140A

The DF115A and DF140A outboards are the perfect solution for boaters looking for a reliable mid-range motor to mount on their pontoon or deck boat. Just like the smaller outboards, the DF115A and DF140A are equipped with Lean Burn Control, optimizing fuel economy and keeping boat owners on the water for longer. Both models feature an in-line four-cylinder, 16-valve, multi-point sequential electronic fuel injection system and offer more reliable, faster starting. An oxygen sensor controls fuel delivery by controlling the air-to-fuel ratio and keeping emissions cleaner and more stable. Should the engine experience abnormal combustion, a Knock Sensor system detects and rectifies engine knock, keeping the engine performance at an optimal range.

Both outboards also feature a water detection system, which alerts the boater of moisture in the fuel with visual and audio warnings. Weighing upwards of 400 pounds, these engines have enough power and strength to satisfy the need for speed and the necessity for ample performance.

DF250AP

Sometimes, speed is not just a preference, it's a requirement. Suzuki's V6, 250 hp DF250AP meets the requirement with the precision and control. Imbued with the same Lean Burn Control and electronic fuel injection as its peers, the DF250AP also offers a two-way water inlet system, which increases water flow and provides greater cooling efficiency when powering up. The 250AP also provides a Selective Rotation System that integrates both regular and counter-rotation gears, allowing the engine to be programmed to operate in either direction. All of the top-of-the-line features allow the DF250AP greater versatility and function, which will have the boater loving his engine just as much as he loves his boat.

DF300AP

Weighing in at 604 pounds, the DF300AP is the ultimate in power and performance. With its V6, 24-valve construction, the 300 hp engine offers the greatest range of power in the Suzuki outboard arsenal. Just as every one of Suzuki's great outboards offer, the 300AP features an electronic fuel injection system, Lean Burn Control, and like its closest cousin, the DF250AP, it offers the Selective Rotation System and the two-way water inlet system.

The DF300AP offers a very impressive list of features that are not included in every engine, making it unique and giving it the upper hand over most outboards in its class. Its long track intake manifold provides smooth airflow, increasing performance. Its large air intake features a water separator which keeps fuel moisture free and allows for smoother combustion. With all of the power that the DF300AP boasts, some added strength is necessary; that's why the pistons have been strengthened with an alumite coating, and a resin coating applied to the piston skirt increases resistance to wear and reduces friction. The driveshaft is offset, creating a more balanced weight distribution, directional stability, and ultimately decreasing vibration and providing an uncommonly smooth ride for an engine this powerful. The most promising detail—if you're still unclear of the prestige of this outboard—is the fact that the DF300AP earned the NMMA innovation award back in 2012. Pound for pound, the 300AP will take on the leading competitors and give consumers something to really get excited about.

New For You

Even with all of the great options available from Suzuki, they weren't satisfied with great; they wanted to give more. Recently, they created a joystick control system, which can be integrated to function with both the DF250AP and DF300AP outboards, affording boaters a unique and comfortable steering experience. Navigating with the joystick gives boat captains the confidence and control needed when they travel through narrow waterways or when docking close-quarters to neighboring vessels.

Also, Suzuki is offering a limited number of its popular DF150 and DF175 model outboards. These limited edition outboards are back by popular demand, but won't last for long. Offering much of what other Suzuki outboards feature, including the electronic fuel injection system, the DF150 and DF175 would make a great engine on any mid-sized boat.

Making The "Suzuki" Choice

Getting into the right boat takes time and patience, and getting the right engine can be just as time-intensive, but don't let this get you down. Taking a trip over to a Suzuki dealership can be an eye-opening experience and take the hassle out of purchasing your new motor. So, before you mount just any old engine to that pontoon or deck boat, give Suzuki a thorough look. I promise, you'll be glad you did.
