Resurrection an ’85 Pontoon

Published in the June 2013 Issue June 2013

A good restoration project can be the perfect hobby. Our forum members are great at a lending a helping hand.

[Hot Tommy] threw this out there for the group. To quote the latest James Bond 007 movie, “my hobby is resurrection.” This time I am resurrecting a 1985 Sundancer 24-foot pontoon boat with a mysterious 90hp Force outboard motor. I'm going to try and document my progress here for any who cares about such things. So I am starting with a few "before" shots.

[Drive2Boat] jumped in with his thoughts on the engine. I'm not positive, but I think the Force engine was a cheaper version made by Mercury.

[Hot Tommy] Yes, the engine cover says, "Force by Mercury Marine." My problem is that I have no idea when it was made or what model number it is. That makes it hard to buy parts.

[Moser] Hey Hot Tommy, the first year for a 90hp appears to be 1990. I think you use the HO903 designation in the model because you have a three cylinder motor. The 1990 graphics don't say "Force by Mercury" so I think it is newer than that.

Hot Tommy has been updating quite frequently on his progress. Want to know how it’s going? Have some more advice for him? Head over to the forum at www.pdbmagazine.com to join in.
