They say the more keys you own the more responsibility you have. Even when it comes to recreation or play time, I still can’t seem to get away from a wad of keys in my pocket. When heading to the lake I pack around my truck key, storage lock key, boat key and until recently, my receiver hitch key.
But a marina shop display for BOLT (Breakthrough One-Key Lock Technology) caught my eye and simplified things for me. Not locking my receiver hitch on my truck is not an option; there are just too many thieves out there. But the nice thing about this receiver lock that is part of the BOLT series is it can be permanently set to any key including your truck key, so you don’t have to carry additional keys with you.
The lock doesn't come equipped with a key, but instead is programmed during the first use. When you insert your own key into the cylinder, spring-loaded plate tumblers move up and down until they are matched exactly to that key. The first time the key is rotated, the cylinder is uniquely coded to that key. When the key is removed, the cylinder moves into the locked position. When the key is turned again, it will rotate to the unlocked position. Simply put: the lock will set the first time you insert the key YOU decide you want it to match up with. Now how nice is that?
It features an automotive-grade stainless steel lock shutter to keep out weather and debris and a six-plate tumbler sidebar that prevents picking and bumping. Don’t let the suggested retail price of $38.99 scare you away, it’s worth the convenience and the security.
STRATTEC Security Corporation also makes locks for your spare tire, paddle locks and a variety of other great products that after testing the receiver hitch I’ll be taking a closer look at as well.
