PDB Tested: Goal Zero’s Switch 8

February 2014 PDB Tested Brady L. Kay

We’ve all been there: staring at the battery life indicator on our phone just hoping we have enough juice to make one last call. In this age of technology we live and die by our phones that do a lot more than just make and receive phone calls. These battery-sucking devices are our lifeblood and it’s nice to know if you ever find yourself in need of a recharge there is a company like Goal Zero that has you covered.

I ordered the Switch 8 Solar Recharging Kit out of curiosity more than anything. I don’t usually keep my phone charger on the boat, but this very compact system is something I could see storing in the glovebox quite easily.

Surprisingly this kit can keep your USB devices all charged up with a little help from the sun. The Switch 8 kit can bring back a dead Smartphone instantly and replenish your battery in less than three hours. After utilizing all eight watts of lithium-ion battery power, recharge the Switch 8 on the go with the portable Nomad 3.5 Solar Panel in about six hours or from any USB source in less than four hours. And all of this power is wrapped into an ultra-lightweight, durable aluminum package that’s smaller than a roll of quarters.

The Goal Zero Switch 8 Solar Recharging Kit is available at REI retailers nationwide and REI.com for $99.95.
