Backyard Testing

Published in the June 2014 Issue June 2014 Shootout Brady L. Kay

For years the manufacturers in northern Indiana have been strongly hinting that they’d like to see our annual Shootout Boat Test relocated to Lake Wawasee, a lake that is practically in the backyard for a lot of the pontoon and deck boat builders. Our previous 18 boat tests have been held in southern states such as North Carolina, Georgia and Florida as well as Midwest states like Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee and even southern Indiana. And let’s not forget the year we held one of our Shootouts in Arizona while trying to keep the performance deck boat builders happy.

We’ve moved our test around for years in an attempt to keep it fresh, while also helping our test to feel more like an event than just another gathering of boats.

Well, persistency from the northern Indiana builders finally paid off, as we officially ran out of excuses as to why this Indiana lake wouldn’t be a great place to hold our test. It also helped that the Oakwood Inn, one of our favorite lakeside hotels, recently reopened its doors after being closed down for years. It’s amazing what a little paint and some new furniture will do to a place as we were welcomed with open arms to invade and take over their docks for a week.

Our annual Shootout test is growing each year as we continue to invite all of the pontoon and deck boat manufacturers and encourage them to bring their latest and greatest boats to one location to be evaluated, inspected, photographed and anything else we can think of as we thoroughly go over each one for our review.

Compiled in this issue are our findings, which include pricing for each boat as tested so you can make an informed choice when narrowing your search. If the price tag is too much of a stretch, be sure to look at the options because in most cases by just taking fewer bells and whistles or maybe a little less power, you can find a pontoon or deck boat that better fits your budget. And in some cases, we were testing the manufacturer’s top-of-the line model so it would be worth your time to check out its mid- or entry-level models too if one particular boat interests you.

We also break down what we love about each boat as well as what we’d like to see changed or improved. Because no boat is perfect, we have to include our “just being picky” section, but with some of these high-end models it gets harder and harder each year to find something we don’t like.

As technology has evolved over the years, so has our test. We used to be able to test 25 to 30 boats in three days, but this year we were pushing to get everything completed in five. One of the key factors is our time-consuming video portion of our test, which to be honest, confirms to everyone that I have the ultimate dream job since I show up in the clips diving into tight corners with a big smile on my face while driving the performance pontoons.

Our staff worked overtime to package all of our data, specs and information to fill the pages of our annual Shootout issue. But if you’re looking for a little more, be sure to visit www.pdbmagazine.com to view the video version of the boats we tested.

We hope you enjoy reading our reviews as much as we enjoyed testing the boats and that our efforts will help you make the best boat-buying decision this year.

“The video portion of our test confirms to everyone that I have the ultimate dream job since I show up in the clips diving into tight corners with a big smile on my face.”

Aqua Patio 240 OB Elite

What You Need To Know

Aqua Patio’s Elite pontoon is eye-catching, but what exactly does it mean to be elite? The dictionary will tell you that it means to be the best of anything considered collectively, as a group or a class. For Nautic Global Group it’s about striving to offer the best pontoon in the industry and we’ll let you be the judge if this ‘toon has earned elite status yet.

The Highlights

To us, being elite means leaving nothing to be desired and this Aqua Patio gets off to a great start with its 13-speaker amphitheatre sound system. Along with the Sony stereo, the system includes a 750-watt amp as well as a 10-inch subwoofer. Everywhere we looked we found speakers and each is positioned so you get the most out of them.

At the helm is a very attractive console that includes easy-to-read gauges, lighted rocker switches, access to your stereo controls, as well as a Lowrance depth/fish finder. One other note on the helm stand: we love the elevated platform that improves the ease of driving for the captain.

We’re starting to see a lot of Sea-Grass type flooring, which is great because it’s soft on your feet while still proving easy cleanup. It’s possible that we won’t be seeing a lot of carpet in this industry in another five years or so because this unique flooring is a great fit for our industry.

In the stern you can easily transform two bench seats into a flat sundeck with just a push of a button. We love the versatility of this design, which just gives you even more ways to enjoy this ‘toon. There is a lot of deck space outside of the rear gate, so for safety reasons, rope and a chain for the ladder have been added. Also in the stern is a beefy ski/tow bar as well as an easy-to-use S-shaped boarding ladder that drops deep into the water.

There are three traditional chaise lounges onboard, two in the bow and one in the stern, and each has unique storage built in. For example, the portside bow chaise includes a trash can receptacle, while the other side has a designated space for paper towels as well as your finest bubbly. But our favorite use of space is the pop-up changing room built into the back of the rear-facing chaise that is easy to operate and, when opened, stands nearly 6 feet tall.

Inspection Notes

Below deck the 27-inch diameter pontoons are the base of this 25-footer. There are lifting strakes on both sides of the pontoons and a full length aluminum underskin helps protect the bottom of the boat.

After a close inspection we gave this ‘toon high marks for its fit and finish work, overall unique design as well overall construction. This is a well-built boat that is ideal for families with older, water sport-loving kids.

Performance Evaluation

At full throttle we just missed the 40 mile per hour mark with the Yamaha 150 that helps make this Aqua Patio a great all-around pontoon that has just the right mix of options and features. There’s a lot of power with the Yamaha on the back, but this ‘toon is built more for cruising and simply just enjoying your time on the water.

Our Take

We love the spacious layout and all of the great features that have been packed into this Elite model. The transforming sundeck, stereo system and well-designed helm console are just a few examples of what makes this Aqua Patio a great option.

Avalon Ambassador 2785 RL

What You Need To Know

Known in this industry for building a wide selection of great pontoon boats, with this Ambassador it appears Avalon took the best of what it has to offer and merged it all together to create the ultimate boat.

The Highlights

First impressions start with the exterior, and this ‘toon gets off to a favorable start with a stylish mix of Deco 2 two-tone aluminum walls, a unique rail pattern, plus the eye-catching Decosport wakeboard tower that includes two large speakers, wakeboard rack and a permanent canvas top. There is even a PA system for the tower speakers which allow you to talk to your skiers or tubers.

There is a very high-end feel as you step aboard and make your way through the 27-foot boat. Below the comfy seating that uses exclusive Matrix 50 vinyl are aluminum seat bases that give you tremendous storage space and we love that the storage compartments are all ventilated. There are two chaise lounges in the bow, plus a third chaise located across from the helm station for the first mate that we felt was a great idea. But as comfy as these lounges are, the rear-facing ones in the stern are going to be the two most popular seats onboard. With these rear loungers you have a stereo remote, lighted LED cup holders and our favorite feature is the electric controls that will take the lounger from a flat position to a comfortable reclined angle with just a push of a button. Also in the stern is an extended swim deck with a stainless steel boarding ladder as well as a solid ski/tow bar.

At the helm is everything you need, right at your finger tips including access to the Jensen stereo with Auxiliary and USB ports, a Garmin GPS, plus full instrumentation and switches. Just forward of the helm is a fully-loaded entertainment center that includes a low-draw, 4 amp electric fridge, two stainless steel drawers as well as a full sink and faucet. Plus with just a push of a button, a retractable wine rack with glasses emerges from the unit which is a great way to store these items when you’re not using them.

Other key features worth noting include the large in-floor ski locker that is over 5 feet long inside, high-end Faux Teak decking and a pop-up enclosure that is built into the rear-facing lounger. All of the features included as tested help give this boat a high family-friendly rating.

Inspection Notes

Avalon refers to its high-performance package as the Triple Waveglider. The 25-inch diameter pontoons have high performance lifting fins on both sides of all three tubes for a total of six, plus a side keel for added protection. The .190 hat-shaped cross members are also beefed up to add strength to the boat. Up top the heavy-duty and overbuilt theme continues, as our test crew reported all the hidden areas are well-finished.

Performance Evaluation

Having a 300 horsepower engine on the back tells you two things: this boat is well-built because it can support the power and second, it can really move. With the Evinrude 300 E-TEC we went from zero to 20 mph in just under five and a half seconds and at full throttle we reached speeds over 40 miles per hour.

Our Take

As tested, this loaded Ambassador pontoon appears to have everything you’d need for a great day on the water. Maybe a few more permanent cup holders would be nice, but nothing really stands out as missing from this Avalon. As far as construction and quality, we consider this to be a well-built boat.

Bennington 2575 QCWB

What You Need To Know

The Q Series is the top-of-the-line when it comes to Bennington so you can expect the best in aesthetics and fine detail. With hundreds of options, this boat can be customized to each buyer specifically, but as tested we were impressed with the fully-loaded version we got our hands on.

The Highlights

It’s easy to see you’re on a high-end model and it all starts with the unique exterior that includes a curved bow and an extended (extra 8 inches) bow platform. As you come inside, the ivory-colored interior with Diamond pillow-top upholstery instantly catches your eye. The diamond pattern is standard and it can be found throughout the boat in the seats, helm chair as well as rear loungers.

There are two chaise lounges in the bow with moveable arm rests that include cup holders. But it’s the pair of rear-facing loungers in the stern that rightfully get a lot of attention. There is even a stereo remote in the stern area and these seats just beg to be used.

As you leave the mostly carpeted boat and step outside the stern gate, there is a faux teak flooring that ties in the nautical look. Also in this area is a solid ski/tow pylon as well as a great stainless steel ladder with extra-wide handholds, plus the telescopic ladder stores perfectly under the deck when not in use.

At the elevated helm stand is a very attractive-looking console. The automotive-style dash has a very high-end feel to it and besides full instrumentation, the Sony stereo and Garmin Echo 100 Fish/Depth graph are included as standard features.

Across from the helm is a fully-loaded galley that includes two bar stools, sink and faucet, as well as a fridge. With plenty of storage available, this bar layout is truly ideal for entertaining. If we had to be picky, the walkway between the bar and helm stand is a little narrow and even though the bar stools are removable, they do block access to your mid-ship gate. But for all this entertainment center offers, it’s clearly worth having.
Also, there are great storage options on this model, including the in-floor locker that is nearly 8 feet long inside and at over 2 feet deep, it’s a great place to store your tubes.

Inspection Notes

Not only does the large elliptical-shaped center pontoon offer better performance, it also allows for a larger (50-gallon) fuel tank to be built inside. The two outside pontoons are 25 inches in diameter and the center elliptical pontoon is 32 inches wide, but still only 25 inches tall for easier trailing options. The outside logs are chambered and each has an inside performance foil to grab in a turn, while the elliptical center tube has a pair of lifting strakes. With the elliptical tube you get better displacement so you get more performance, using less horsepower.

Performance Evaluation

Based on how well this Bennington dived into the sharp turns, it was hard to give this one back after we were done testing it. Powered with a Mercury 300 Pro outboard, we nearly hit the 50 mile per hour mark. But this is more than just a go-fast thrill ride, this is an extremely fun boat to drive that handles well and put big smiles on our faces.

Our Take

It’s safe to say there is nothing missing on this luxurious and sporty pontoon as tested. It’s a fully-loaded thrill ride that is worthy of its top-of-the-line reputation.

Crest 250 Savannah NX SLR2

What You Need To Know

A few years back Crest encountered a major facelift across the board in an attempt to break away from the boxy mold that past pontoon boats were known for. It’s safe to say this Savannah is like nothing else and it really impressed us with its looks as well as its performance.

The Highlights

NX refers to “Next Generation” and most would agree this is a sport pontoon with an attitude. From the French-inspired styling and colors to the overall design, there is a very nautical feel to this boat that we truly love.

With the fiberglass interior, Crest is able to sculpt and shape the boat exactly how they want it, while adding unique features along the way.  The aluminum billet dash includes full instrumentation, plus a Hummingbird 385 color fish finder with GPS. The push button switches and master power cut off really add to the sporty feel of this console, not to mention the Gussi steering wheel. We love the storage compartment for the captain that includes a 12-volt outlet as well as auxiliary ports inside to keep all of your electronics protected. If we had to be picky, we wish this glove box—that is located forward of the windscreen on the side of the helm stand—was a little closer and not such a reach for the driver. But as is it’s not a big deal.

Across from the helm is a comfy chair for your first mate that looks like it was taken from a home theatre. Forget the four loungers onboard; this might just become the most popular seat onboard. Plus worth noting is all the additional storage compartments for the seating throughout the boat that include 12 volts inside and the LED cup holders and stereo speaker covers really finish off the high-end look.

In the stern is Crest’s Club Seating, which includes two rear-facing loungers with a pop-up changing room stored nicely below. There is also additional storage everywhere you look including behind-seat backs as well built into the fiberglass design. And when you factor in the large in-floor ski locker, it really is amazing how much storage space you have on this boat.

Other key amenities include the power bimini top, stainless ski/tow bar, easy-to-use boarding ladder, teak-looking vinyl flooring as well as the dual trash cans located in the back of the bow chaise lounge on the portside.

Inspection Notes

Crest calls its performance package the CP3; besides the third pontoon you gain an in-floor ski locker that is nearly 7 feet wide. Two 25-inch diameter pontoons along with a 26-inch diameter center tube with lifting strakes make up the hull. From a construction and fit and finish perspective, this Crest earns high marks for its overall quality and design.

Performance Evaluation

If you’re going to build a sporty pontoon like this Savannah, you better be able to back it up with performance, and with the Mercury Verado 300hp outboard on the back it certainly does. This thrill ride had us nearly hitting the 50 mph mark at full throttle, but it’s the way the hull allows us to dive into the sharp turns that impressed us the most.

Our Take

For those looking for a high-end pontoon that was designed by engineers who thrive on out of the box thinking, this Crest Savannah is worthy of a closer look. This is a well-built ‘toon with luxurious amenities and you can clearly see the extra attention that went into the details to make sure this boat not only looked stylish, but also focuses on being comfortable and use-friendly too.

G3 Sun Catcher X322 RC

What You Need To Know

We love getting our hands on brand new models that are just being released, especially when the pontoon is built by a solid company like G3 Boats that prides itself on safety and quality. After a quick first impression, we knew this Sun Catcher wouldn’t disappoint.

The Highlights

As you step onto this boat, there is just something very inviting about the interior. From the non-skid marine grade vinyl flooring to the tan soft-touch vinyl seating, the simplicity of the layout is welcoming. There are two forward-facing and two rear-facing lounges onboard, plus we love the identical helm chair for the first mate that slides, swivels and reclines for total comfort.

Rated for up to 12 people, there really isn’t an uncomfortable seat on the entire boat. If we had to be picky, adding an accent color or fabric inlay to the vinyl seats might improve the high-end feel, but overall the seats are all comfortable and that’s what truly matters.

As tested, this particular model has zero options so everything you see comes standard including the custom fiberglass reinforced console with G3 multi-function blue back-lit gauges and a flush mount Garmin Echo 200 Fish Finder that is centered in the dash. There are controls on the console for your Sony stereo that is satellite and Bluetooth capable and we love that the main stereo unit is protected from the elements under the helm. There is also a hand-held stereo remote so you can control your music from any seat onboard. Besides a tilt steering wheel with power steering, the captain will also appreciate all the storage compartments that are built into the helm that are ideal for keys and wallets.

Speaking of storage, there are a ton of options on this Sun Catcher including the in-floor ski locker that has an extra wide opening and nearly 8 feet of room inside. Other key features worth noting include the pop-up changing room that is built into the back of the portside bow lounger (and is over 6 feet tall when open) and a removable ski/tow pylon that stores away nicely when not being used.

Inspection Notes

Built on three 23- by 25-inch diameter flotation filled U-shaped logs with lifting strakes, the solid hull includes an all-aluminum motor pod and a full-length performance shield. Each pontoon is made from .100 gauge aluminum with the nosecones being constructed of .200 gauge. The redesigned nose cones include heavy gauge spray deflectors and overall undercarriage earned high marks by our inspection crew for its well-built and well-executed design.

Up top there is nearly 20 feet of usable deck space from inside the gates and overall we consider this to be a very safe and family-friendly pontoon, especially considering the tall and consistent rail height of over 27 inches throughout the boat.

Performance Evaluation

Rated for up to a 225hp engine, with this hull you might not need anything bigger than the Yamaha 150 that we tested. She’s got a quick burst of speed and at full throttle we reached speeds over 35 mph. The turns were nice and flat and at no time did we feel unsafe, which only added to our safety rating. G3 Boats is a Yamaha-owned company, but all things being equal, we feel this Yamaha 150 is the ideal fit for the new Sun Catcher.

Our Take

Well-built and family-friendly are possibly the boats best two characteristics. We love the comfort, the long list of standard features, as well as all of the storage capabilities on this great performing Sun Catcher.

Why we love this boat…This is a classy and sophisticated pontoon that is well-built and safe, especially for those families with young children.

Hampton 2680 DRL

What You Need To Know

Hampton took its popular pontoon model that includes rear-facing stern lounges and created this unique deck boat for the new model year. With the proven fiberglass hull and the plush pontoon seating, you truly get the best of both worlds with this hybrid.

The Highlights

From the deck up you’d never guess you weren’t on a pontoon boat. All of the great features we’ve come to love with Hampton interiors can be found on this deck boat with a few other new perks. For starters, there are two large in-floor lockers that utilize the extra space from the hull below. Both are nearly 2 feet deep and each extends to over 4 feet in length.

The area that’s going to get the most attention (which should surprise no one) is the plush rear-facing loungers in the stern. We’re not used to seeing such a great layout where three people can comfortably lounge on the back of a deck boat. This seating area is outside of the rear gate, so we especially love the tall stainless railing for this section. Also in the stern is an extended swim platform that is color-matched to the exterior rails, a large ski/tow pylon as well as telescoping boarding ladder. Also worth noting is the vinyl teak-looking decking in the stern that helps separate this area from the rest of the boat.

Inside the room interior there is nearly 13 feet of usable deck space from the bow gate to the rear bench seat and the majority of the boat is carpeted with the bow having matching faux teak vinyl flooring.

With a total of three chaise lounges there’s plenty of room to get comfortable, but it’s the different colors and textures used in the vinyl that we can appreciate most. There is a very high-end feel to this interior and that includes the beautiful helm console that is complete with large easy-to-read multi-function gauges, depth sounder and well-labeled rocker switches. From bow to stern Hampton was going for a luxurious high-end feel and they clearly achieved it.

Inspection Notes

On the semi-V fiberglass hull, the Glide Ride chine design helps give the boat amazing control at all speeds. The composite hull stringers are encapsulated with flotation foam and we found everything below deck to be well-finished. Inside there are three gates and the majority of the boat is well-protected with a 28-inch tall perimeter railing.

After a closer inspection this deck boat earned high marks for quality construction, layout design, as well as for its fit and finish work. We also consider this Hampton to be safe and family-friendly boat.

Performance Evaluation

When you combine a proven hull with the power of the Honda 250hp outboard, you have a recipe for a great time on the water. At full throttle we reached speeds in the mid 40mph range and of course with the V-hull bottom she banks beautifully in the tight turns. Manufactured by the same company that builds PlayCraft pontoons, it’s nice to see this Hampton performing like we’ve come to expect from years of testing its other boats.

Our Take

This Hampton is where luxury and performance come together to create a spacious and amenity-packed layout that is extremely fun to drive. We’ve seen some good rear-facing lounges in the pontoon segment, but nothing like this on a deck boat. This Missouri-based manufacturer comes through in style with its new 2680 DRL creation.

Why we love this boat…You just won’t find plush rear-facing stern lounges like this on a deck boat and they’re actually better than some pontoon layouts as well.

Just being picky…The four-step boarding ladder in the stern extends nearly 4 feet into the water, but we’d like to see some type of a hand hold for easier boarding.

NOTABLE STANDARDS

Hurricane SunDeck Sport 201 OB

 What You Need To Know

The more people the better, right? Hurricane seems to agree with this statement with the release of its redesigned SunDeck Sport. With a deeper deck, the passenger capacity has been increased to 11 and with a unique wraparound seating configuration, there’s plenty of room for everyone.

 The Highlights

Sleek is probably the best way to describe this deck boat from Hurricane. The low profile helps make it fun to drive, but we’ll get to that in a minute. What makes the seating so unique is the adjustable seatbacks located across from the helm. You can easily convert the bench seat into two separate lounges and the two positions allow you to select the angle. It’s a very unique design and offers a lot of versatility for your passengers.

At the helm, centered between the large gauges, is the optional Garmin 50s GPS that is perfectly located so the driver can keep an eye on it. The dash includes toggle switches and below is where you’ll find the stereo controls, which to be honest we felt were a little low. The boat we tested was a prototype and a few changes have been made to the production models including relocating the stereo controls to the side of the helm so it will be a lot easier to access. We love that Hurricane is always striving to improve its boats and relocating the stereo is a good example of that. Just forward of the helm is a small sink and faucet and the storage space below the helm console is well finished.

It’s an option, but when you see it in action it will quickly make your must-have list of features. Xtreme Tower Products (XTP) has released its patent-pending XB (Xtreme Bimini) and besides giving the Hurricane a sporty look, it’s also one of the most functional bimini tops out there. It easily lowers while pivoting so it doubles as a cargo rack for your water toys. With the straps on top you can secure your tubes so you don’t clutter your deck when the kids are taking a break from being pulled.

With multiple telescoping boarding ladders and a ski/tow pylon, this Hurricane is clearly designed to be a great cruising boat. But after a closer inspection it’s also set up for fishing. There’s an aerated livewell built into the bow step and there are two pedestal mounts on the bow for fishing chairs, which we found nicely stored in the large in-floor ski locker. The versatility on this great all-around model is amazing.

 Inspection Notes

Part of the redesign for the new model year includes longer strakes below for truer tracking. The fiberglass V-hull is well-constructed and overall we consider this to be a safe, family-friendly design.

 Performance Evaluation

With the Sea Star hydraulic steering, she handles like a dream as were able to easily dive into the sharp turns. Powered with an Evinrude 150hp E-TEC we reached speeds over 40 miles per hour and our impressive time of just 4.8 seconds to go from zero to 20mph surprised us a little. This Hurricane handles great and is very responsive, especially in those nice tight turns.

Our Take

Life is full of compromises, especially for the family who wants a great cruising boat to pull water toys with, yet also loves to fish. With this Hurricane SunDeck Sport 201 OB everyone wins. There’s just enough options mixed in with great standard features to make everyone happy. Plus with the increased seating capacity, no one needs to be left at the dock.

JC SportToon 26TT

What You Need To Know

Not only does JC successfully break away from the traditional-looking square pontoon boat, but it’s clear the engineers who design these boats actually spend a lot of time on the water too. Each year JC finds a way to improve its boats and the proof can be found when you come aboard the SportToon 26TT.

The Highlights

We’ll start in the stern and work our way forward. We love the look of the dual extended swim platforms and below each is a telescopic boarding ladder. Outside the rear gate there is plenty of extra room to move around and we absolutely love the two 12-volt outlets that allow you to air up your tubes. There is also a heavy-duty ski/tow bar that is included with the standard features.

Inside the stainless rear swinging gates are two rear-facing lounges with plenty of storage space below. But what make these loungers unique are the power backrests. With a simple push of a button you can easily adjust the angle of your lounger.

At the elevated helm platform is a deluxe JC captain’s chair that slides, swivels and reclines and the console itself is very sporty-looking. The Humminbird Matrix 788ci HD GPS is centered between large, easy-to-read, multi-function gauges as well as stereo and spotlight controls. The Clarion stereo includes six large JL Audio speakers, which you can’t truly appreciate until you’ve heard it yourself. Our favorite helm stand feature is the deluxe flip-top that provides easy access to the wiring for your gauges that is truly like nothing else in the industry.

Across from the helm is a reclining first mate chair, complete with a flip-out leg rest. Rated for up to 16 people, it’s easy to find a comfy seat on this boat and if the first mate chair is taken, one of the two bow chaise lounges with movable arm and head rests will certainly work. There are close to 30 permanent cup holders on this JC, which is amazing when you think about it. The entire boat uses Sea Grass flooring, which the Indiana-based manufacturer refers to as “JC Grass.” It’s good-looking, padded and allows you to clean up the boat quickly, so it’s easy to see why this flooring is so popular.

Other key amenities worth noting include the optional wakeboard tower that includes two JL Audio speakers, an in-floor ski locker with auto bilge, plus all the stainless steel hardware that is used throughout.

Inspection Notes

Three, high-volume U-shaped pontoons are the base for this 26-foot boat, and the lifting fins on the inside of the outer tubes and on both sides of the center pontoon are nicely welded. The Z-shaped cross members are on 16-inch centers and are bolted to the plywood deck and the splash skin fully covers the bottom. The pointed bow has been extended, which helps create a lot of room onboard.

Overall, the boat earned high marks for craftsmanship, fit and finish work as well as for its safe, family-friendly design. If we had to be picky a changing room and a trash receptacle seem to be the only things missing from this great day-use boat.

Performance Evaluation

JC is offering two different Teleflex steering options, one for comfortable leisure driving and the other for more aggressive and quick turning applications. The hydraulic steering makes a huge difference as we were able to dive into the sharp turns and with the Evinrude 250 E-TEC on the back, she handled like a dream.

Our Take

This safe and family-friendly layout is extremely inviting and because it’s constructed by JC, you know it’s built to last.

Lowe SS 210

What You Need To Know

Just a handful of key changes have been made to the 2014 version of the SS 210, yet it’s amazing how much Lowe was able to pack into this 21-footer. There is great use of space with this family-friendly layout that actually feels larger than it really is.

 The Highlights

A new fencing design has been added and the exterior blue color is the ideal match for the Grand Cayman tan interior, which is a new color option for the new model year as well. The tan helps give the ‘toon a high-end feel, but it’s the blue accents in the vinyl that give the boat a much-needed splash of color. Even the simplistic logo is the exact blue color and stitched nicely into the seats. You can’t go wrong with this color combination and although other accent colors are available, we love the blue color that is used throughout.

With a lower leg bolster that’s not quite as aggressive as other seating configurations we’ve tested in the past, the seat comfort is truly improved. There is one chaise lounge onboard and with a passenger rating of 11 people, there are plenty of great seats for everyone to get comfortable.

At the Grand Cayman tan fiberglass helm the three-spoke steering wheel will get a lot of attention and rightfully so. We love the sporty look and feel to the tilt wheel as well as the angled elevated footrest that allows the captain to truly get comfortable. The dash includes large, easy-to-read gauges, lighted switches, as well as a 12-volt port and access to the Fusion stereo. If we had to be picky, we’d like to see more than just two speakers as part of the standard package, but an upgrade to a six-speaker system is available as an option.

In the stern is a large traditional sundeck with storage below that works as a large box for tubes and other water toys, but you do have the option to make this into a pop-up changing room if needed. The boarding ladder has extra wide handholds and the optional ski/tow bar will see plenty of action with the Mercury 150hp outboard.

 Inspection Notes

The 25-inch diameter pontoons are multi-chambered and include full-length keels. Plus the cross-members are on 24-inch centers and extend the full width of the boat. From the weld quality to the overall fit and finish work, this Lowe earned high marks for its craftsmanship.

Up top there is over 14 feet of usable deck space from the bow gate to the rear bench seat. From a safety standpoint, we like the consistent 26-inch tall rails throughout the perimeter of the boat that will help keep younger children safe while giving moms one less thing to worry about.

Performance Evaluation

With the Mercury 150hp on the back we jumped up on plane quickly for a smooth ride. At full throttle we just missed the 40 mile per hour mark and our zero to 20mph time came in at a respectable 5.5 seconds. The three-logged pontoon turns well and overall she handles great at all speeds.

Our Take

Again, great use of space on this 21-footer leaves plenty of room to move around as needed. Little added touches like the elevated footrest for the captain, blue accent colors on the tan vinyl and a trash receptacle built into the lone chaise lounge really add to the value of this Lowe.

Lowe Victory 220

What You Need To Know

For those used to seeing all-aluminum boats from this manufacturer, this new Victory 220 may catch you off guard. Is it aluminum or is it fiberglass? The new sport/deck line is actually both. You get the same proven aluminum hull on the bottom with an all-new fiberglass top that gives you the “best of both worlds” approach.

 The Highlights

The 22-foot Victory 220 includes an 8-foot, 6-inch beam, a 14-degree deadrise with a transom height of 20 inches. Rated for up to 1,900 pounds or 10 people, it will be easy for everyone to get comfortable on this new hybrid boat.

If you’re going to have a sporty boat that includes a large wakeboard tower then you better have a helm console that matches and in this case Lowe most certainly does. We love the look of the dash that includes a solid Gussi chrome steering wheel, large gauges with chrome bezels, toggle switches, as well as access to your Fusion stereo controls. The standard system from Fusion includes an iPod Dock and four 6-inch speakers so you can really blast those tunes. And when you combine all of these great helm features with the full wrap-around windshield, you’ve got yourself one sporty 22-footer.

There are a few different color options available for the interior and as tested we like how the green accent color in the vinyl brings life to the dark grey seat cushions. The majority of the boat is carpeted, but in the stern area is a faux wood vinyl decking. Since there’s no other wood trim onboard, a grey vinyl floor might tie in a little better with the rest of the layout, but that’s just us being picky.

Behind the full-length rear bench seat are dual insulated storage compartments that are ideal for keeping your beverage of choice on ice. Also worth noting is the large amount of storage space onboard including a 4-foot deep in-floor ski locker as well as little cubby cutouts with numerous cup holders for your passengers to store miscellaneous items.

Inspection Notes

The proven aluminum hull includes a reverse chine hull with a heavy-duty extruded keel. The aluminum and fiberglass mesh perfectly together to create a very unique exterior.

Inside, there is nearly 13 feet of usable deck space with plenty of room to walk around. From a safety standpoint, the tall black grab rails in the bow not only help tie in the optional tower, but there rails help make the boat safer as well.

This new layout does lack gates or openings in the stern, which means you’ll have to step on the seats when boarding from the back, but the tradeoff is a safer boat for smaller children.

Performance Evaluation

Rated for up to a 200hp outboard, the Mercury Verado 175hp appears to be the ideal fit from our perspective. We reached speeds well over 40 miles per hour at full throttle and we were pleased at how well this V-hull carved up the sharp turns. She’s quick, responsive and a lot of fun to drive.

Our Take

This is a quick boat, proving this Lowe definitely has the power to back up its sporty look. And the added touch of having green vinyl accents on the seats helps give this boat a little attitude as well. There’s nothing in the industry right now quite like this hybrid and we expect to see it turning a lot of heads this summer.

Why we love this boat…It looks sporty and has the performance to back it up. From the color scheme to the wakeboard tower, this boat screams fun.

Manitou 25 Legacy SRS SHP

What You Need To Know

With this Legacy it’s all about being versatile as Manitou has created a solid multi-use boat from bow to stern. With a dual-purpose theme, comfort and performance never looked so good.

The Highlights

It’s a new option for the manufacturer and we feel the Almond color teak vinyl flooring with a snap-in Sea Grass mat is a great combo that is going to be a popular upgrade this season. Another new feature is the Legacy seating that includes a cutout for blue track lighting that, when combined with the other LED accent lighting onboard—like the cup holders as well as the exterior lights—really takes mood lighting for those evening cruises to a whole new level.

At the raised fiberglass helm, the standard Gussi wheel perfectly flows with the sporty console that includes lighted toggle switches, Lowrance color GPS/fish finder, as well as an Infinity Blue Tooth stereo so you can stream music from your phone. We love the flip-up bolster on the comfy captain’s chair, plus a great added touch is the identical chair for your first mate.

Besides the performance, the next most talked about trait on this Legacy is going to be the multi-use, dual rear loungers. You can stretch out, or simply flip up the seat and slide in a portable table to create a small picnic seating area. With a stereo remote also in the stern as well as two large speakers, this is where everyone is going to want to be. Also in the aft is a stainless ski/tow bar and there is even a rotating stainless guard rail that increases the level of safety in the stern by acting as a gate.

Other amenities worth noting include the drop-down furniture hinges that allow easy access below your seats, trash can storage built-in to the back of the rear-facing loungers, a pop-up changing room built in the back of the bow chaise lounge (that stands 5-foot, 4-inches when open) and a very large storage locker that is over 7 feet inside that is built into the center pontoon that includes a bilge in case water gets in.

Inspection Notes

The Sport Handling Package (SHP) is a unique hull design that includes two 23-inch diameter pontoons and a 27-inch diameter center log with positive angle lifting strakes on all three. After a close inspection we found nothing that would keep this boat from earning a high score in fit and finish work, overall design and quality craftsmanship. As far as family-friendly, the four-step boarding ladder reaches over 4 feet into the water for easy access and the railing measures 26 inches tall for the majority of the boat, earning this ‘toon a high score.

Performance Evaluation

Luxury and style meet thrill-seeking fun head-on with this Legacy. We flirted with the 50 mile per hour mark with the beefy Evinrude 300hp E-TEC outboard, but it’s the way this Manitou dives into those sharp turns like a V-hull that impressed us the most. Of course the power-assist steering really helps drive up the fun factor rating as well and the best part is that it’s included with the long list of other standard features.

Our Take

You pay a little more for the complete package, but you get everything you need for a great day on the water. This is an extremely fun boat to drive that is loaded with plenty of standard features with the right mix of key options to give you a multi-function pontoon that will be a great fit for most families.

Why we love this boat…Nothing is an afterthought on this Legacy. The interior flows well in both design and color scheme and the SHP hull always puts a smile on our face.

Misty Harbor Biscayne Bay 2285CU

What You Need To Know

This is a great all-around pontoon that features key amenities and plenty of power, plus it’s coupled with a family-friendly price. You get a lot for your recreational dollar with this Biscayne Bay model from Misty Harbor.

The Highlights

For the new model year, the neutral interior is now included as the standard package that helps give the boat an inviting look and feel. The vinyl used on the seats is two-toned, which we really like because it helps with the high-end feel the manufacturer is going for. The full fencing—that is available in monotone or two-tone colors—not only provides an improved look, but it also helps make the boat safe for pets and small children. Speaking of being safe, throughout the boat the rails are 28 inches tall, which helps earn this ‘toon a high safety rating. Simply put, it’s a great family pontoon.

Included with this model are co-captain’s chairs—or Sport Recliners—which gives your first mate an identical seat to the one enjoyed by the captain. Both swivel and recline, making them two of the most versatile seats onboard. For those looking for extra back, neck and head support, high-back reclining captain and co-captain seats are available as an option.

At the fiberglass helm are large, easy-to-read gauges, plus an Alpine Bluetooth stereo system that includes four speakers. We couldn’t help but notice that with the neutral interior color scheme the white speakers stand out a little, however the important thing is they allowed us to blast our tunes.

In the stern we love the vinyl deck on this mostly carpeted model. There is just enough room to towel off after boarding the boat using the rear ladder before opening the rear gate to come inside.

There are four chaise lounges onboard and from the bow gate to the stern gate there is over 18 feet of space inside the fencing on this 23-footer. Built into the portside bow chaise lounge is a pop-up changing room that opens to about 5 and a half feet tall. Other key features worth noting include the stainless cup holders, tilt steering and the ample storage space below all bench seats.

Inspection Notes

Three 25-inch diameter pontoons form the foundation of this boat, with each tube fitted with lifting strakes to bring the boat up to a higher plane. This center tube (Sportoon) is different from Misty Harbor’s regular full-length center tube in that it is just 16.5 feet long while the outside tubes are 22.5 feet and all three are constructed of .090 gauge aluminum.

After a closer inspection, this pontoon earned high marks for its fit and finish work and overall craftsmanship. It’s a solid and well-built boat from bow to stern.

Performance Evaluation

Powered with a Suzuki 150 four-stroke, this 40 mile per hour boat remains nice and flat in turns and with a zero to 20 mile per hour time of just over 5 seconds she could really use some type of ski/tow bar. You feel very safe and in control behind the wheel because of the way the boat handles as well as how responsive the steering is.

Our Take

From the center walk through layout to the plush seating, there is just something very inviting about this Biscayne Bay model from Misty Harbor that we really like. It’s a great all-around spacious pontoon that comes in at a nice price point and it includes just the right amount of standard features with key options to be a great fit for a lot of families or couples.

NauticStar 243DC Sport Deck

What You Need To Know

The 100 percent wood-free construction, Infinity sound system and the leather touch upholstery are just some of the features that make this a popular choice with experienced boaters. But when we dug a little deeper, we found even more reasons to like this new Sport Deck.

 The Highlights

Following the success of the 223DC that was introduced last year, we love how the 243DC merges deck boat style and spacious interior with the ride and feel of a V-hull runabout. From bow to stern this boat is loaded with a lot of great standard features including a full wrap-around windshield with folding door and a great head compartment that includes a sink, wash down and a window.

Other key features include bow and stern telescopic stainless ladders, bow anchor locker, and a large in-floor ski locker that is nicely finished inside and at 6 feet long gives you plenty of room to store your toys.

At the helm is a sporty console that flows well with the overall design of the boat. Large, easy-to-read gauges, Lowrance GPS and Infinity stereo with auxiliary ports, are all part of the console design. For the captain is a comfy bucket seat with a flip-up bolster and there is even an identical helm chair for your first mate directly across. Behind the helm chair is a sink with a granite-looking top and a trash bag holder compartment below, but with this location it does limit the space the driver has when behind the wheel.

In the stern is a solid ski/tow pylon, the second stainless boarding ladder as well as wash down to help keep dirt from coming aboard. Speaking of easy entry, we love that the cushion in the stern flips up so you don’t have to walk on your seats to get in. This design is very smart because you don’t sacrifice any seating area and are able to comfortably step in. NauticStar has had this design for years, but we still love to mention it.

 Inspection Notes

From a construction standpoint, we like that no wood is used on this boat. The 100 percent composite construction on the hull includes a one-piece molded stringer system. The 243DC earned high marks for fit and finish work and for its family-friendly design. As far a maintenance, with the self-bailing cockpit, cleanup is a breeze. Just unsnap the optional carpet and wash the boat clean. Even in the under-the-seat storage compartments the water will run out the scuppers.

 Performance Evaluation

Sharp tight turns are not a problem with this unique hull and we love how she dived into those corners. Powered with a Yamaha 200hp we reached speeds over 20 miles per hour in just five and a half seconds with a top speed just over 45 mph. This is a fun boat that features the exclusive Star Performance System that includes a shallow draft for fishing, great towing capabilities due to the aft deadrise and transom width, fast acceleration with the planing pods and air assist chine, as well as the sharp entry V hull. Simply put, we had fun driving this new NauticStar.

 Our Take

This is a safe, family-friendly deck boat that as tested has a lot going for it. It really is a great all-around versatile boat that could be seen on the Intracoastal waterway one weekend and then anchored in a cove on a popular lake the next. Plus there are plenty of great comfort features onboard that will allow you to stay out longer and enjoy your time boating.

Palm Beach Sport Cruise 220 Bullet

What You Need To Know

Nearly 60 years ago, Palm Beach started building value-driven models and that tradition continues today with its Sport Cruise 220. To be clear, the traditional standard Sport Cruise 220 isn’t necessarily designed to be a go-fast pontoon. But it’s nice that with a few key upgrades including the 30-inch diameter “Bullet” center pontoon and a wider deck (and a little help from a large outboard), this Palm Beach is built with quality construction that easily allows the value-driven pontoon to transform into a nearly 50 mile per hour pontoon.

The Highlights

Designed to be more contemporary to attract a younger demographic, we love the silver metallic helm console, table, as well as the storage compartment doors that help with the fresh look of this Palm Beach. Overall the interior is white, but the silver really gives it a unique feel. Plus that same metallic look is found on the rail design on the exterior that helps tie it all in.

Without the performance options, this pontoon could possibly fall into the entry-level category, at least the base price without an engine of just over $11K would suggest it. But don’t be fooled into thinking there is anything basic about this 22-footer. There is plenty of seating onboard including two bow chaise lounges and we love the under-seat hinges for the seat storage compartments which allow you quick access or you can fully drop down the cushion if you really need to dig deep to find what you’re looking for.

On this particular model, lack of storage is not an issue. The in-floor ski-locker is plenty deep and at 6 feet in length there is a lot of room for your water toys. At the compact helm stand is a fully-functional console that includes all the gauges you need, plus an auxiliary port and 12-volt for your electronics. A lockable storage compartment for the driver as well as a cup holder would improve the design, but we still like the functionality of this helm.

In stern is an impressive four-step aluminum ladder with tall handholds as well as a nice non-skid floor that is just in this rear section of the mostly carpeted boat. Also included in the stern is a large ski/tow bar that will get plenty of use with the 250hp engine on the back.

Inspection Notes

Below deck the 25-inch diameter outside pontoons and the 30-inch diameter center bullet pontoon include a solid keel that adds strength and wear resistance to the hull. Worth noting, Palm Beach uses a multi-chambered vented construction that prevents tubes from filling if punctured. The Z-channel cross members are on 24-inch centers overall and are on 12-inch centers near the transom for added support.

From the bow gate to the rear bench seat there is nearly 17 feet of useable deck space and we like that the rails throughout the boat are at a safe, family-friendly height of 28 inches tall. This boat earned high marks for quality and craftsmanship and we consider this to be a very well-built boat.

Being powered with a 250 HO E-TEC outboard from Evinrude has its advantages, like a zero to 20 mile per hour time of less than four seconds for starters. We nearly reached the half century mark at full throttle and to be honest the bursts of speed really surprised us.

Our Take

Again this is a value-driven model that just happens to be built well enough that it can be converted into a high-performance model. We love the versatility of this pontoon that will attract a wide range of buyers.

Why we love this boat…How easily this pontoon can convert from an entry-level model to a Bullet ‘toon with a high output engine speaks volumes on the quality and construction.

Just being picky…It’s a compact helm console on a value driven boat, but a locking glove box for the captain would be nice as well as possibly a cup holder.

Parti Kraft Monaco 240 CR

What You Need To Know

For nearly a year we kept hearing about plans for a new look Parti Kraft line, so forgive us if we seemed a little anxious to finally get a sneak peak. Simply put, it was worth the wait. There are now three different lines within Parti Kraft with Monaco being its mid-level offering and we could hardly wait any longer to get behind the wheel.

The Highlights

With a manufacturer like Nautic Global Group who offers several different lines of high-quality pontoons, it can be a difficult task to come up with a great new look while not competing directly with your other brands. Somehow the engineers were able to pull off this feat by offering an interior that was inspired by high-quality outdoor patio furniture.

The wicker/weave-like sides for the seating perfectly complement the tall and overstuffed seat cushions that are extremely inviting.

All of the tan furniture ties in nicely with the layout and we especially like the fabric striped insert found on the helm chair that gives this boat a little splash of color. The striped fabric also matches up with the two throw pillows that are part of the Moonstone Décor package that also includes Sea Grass flooring for the aft deck. The majority of the boat is covered with Palm Sand carpet and with the palm tree logo, having a palm leaf pattern in the carpet is a nice added touch.

In the stern we love the extended swim platform that gives you plenty of room to towel off before coming aboard from the water. Speaking of boarding, the optional S-shaped stainless steel ladder is truly designed to make getting out of the water as simple as possible.

At the helm is a functional helm console that includes large easy-to-read gauges as well as access to your stereo controls. If we had to be picky the location of the throttle control seemed a little low, but it’s nothing to be overly concerned with. Key options include the stainless hardware upgrade, in-dash depth finder and a beefy ski/tow bar.

Inspection Notes

Below deck, the two-log pontoon design consists of 25-inch diameter pontoons that are chambered with a full keel and include splash guards. The C-channel cross members are on 16-inch centers and bolted to the plywood deck.

Up top there is nearly 17 feet of usable deck space from inside the bow gate to the rear bench. Like the wring below deck, the wiring under the helm console is also protected and very organized.

Overall, this Parti Kraft earned high marks for its craftsmanship as well as the design. We found no dangerous or sharp edges and all the hidden areas were well-finished.

Performance Evaluation

Powered with a 90hp Yamaha, this is a great cruising pontoon that is capable of speeds in the mid 20s at full throttle, which only proves just how versatile and family-friendly this new look pontoon from Parti Kraft really is.

Our Take

There’s not a lot of color onboard and we like it that way. With the tall seatback cushions you’re immediately drawn into the interior and with just the right mix of great standard features and key options, as tested this pontoon is loaded and ready for a great day on the water. It wasn’t easy, but Parti Kraft was able to redesign and improve this popular brand that is going to attract a lot of new buyers.

Why we love this boat…The out-of-the box thinking that went into the seating provides a refreshing look at pontoon interiors. We love unique concepts that are well executed.

Just being picky…You shouldn’t be constantly adjusting your throttle anyway so this isn’t a bid deal, but we felt the throttle position was a little low for most drivers.

PlayCraft PowerToon Xtreme 2700

What You Need To Know

We’re used to seeing a wide range of color from this manufacturer who is known in this industry for building sporty, well-built, go fast pontoons. So to see the black panels with just the right amount of yellow on the exterior took us by surprise, but we instantly loved what we were seeing.

The Highlights

If the massive wakeboard tower doesn’t put a smile on your face, the Power package sound system with Quad Blaster tower speakers surely will. This sound system goes above and beyond what you’d expect to find on a traditional pontoon, but of course any one familiar with PlayCraft already knows these exceptional boats are far from basic. The tower provides even more room to add speakers and with the subwoofers, you can get a real nice bass thump as you push for 50 miles per hour.

The all-white interior takes advantage of an aggressive color scheme that includes a dominant yellow, along with a black checkered pattern. And because the furniture is all done in-house, there are over 50 different color combinations available so you can truly make your boat your own.  The colors may change, but what remains is the 35-ounce vinyl, with a Pre-Fixx protective finish that ensures your seats will not only look good, but will be durable as well.

Throughout the boat you’ll find plenty of yellow to tie in the look like on the canopy top, ski/tow bar, as well as the side trim. However, our favorite use of the accent color is the yellow bezels around the gauges at the helm console that only add to the sporty and complete look.

There are two chaise lounges in the bow with great storage below, including the flip-out trash receptacle located in the back of the portside lounge. In the stern the tall sundeck provides great storage options and of course one of our favorite features is the boarding system because it’s one of the easiest ways to get back on the boat from the water. Actual steps are built into the pontoon and when you add the four-step ladder below you’re nearly 2 feet deeper in the water when compared to other ladders. Other key features include a locking glove box, in-floor storage and we really like the padded vinyl sides around the interior of the boat that creates a nice and clean look.

Inspection Notes

Designed with performance in mind, the 36-inch diameter center pontoon and the two 24-inch diameter side tubes are braced well to the one-piece floor using C-shaped cross-members. Included in this package is a full-length performance shield along with heavy-duty extruded aluminum RAC-R-FINS.

After a close inspection, this Xtreme model from PlayCraft earned high marks for its overall quality of construction, for the layout and design, and for its fit and finish work.

Performance Evaluation

Zero surprise here. The Xtreme 2700 as tested with a Mercury 300 Verado Pro is exhilarating to drive. She dives beautifully into the sharp turns and at full throttle we just missed the 50 mile per hour mark. This is a thrill ride, but because of its “over-built” and solid construction, you feel extremely safe and perfectly in control at all times.

Our Take

We love that not only is this performance pontoon sporty and aggressive-looking, but that it also has the performance and style to back it up. As expected from this manufacturer who knows a thing or two about creating and perfecting go fast pontoons, this Xtreme doesn’t disappoint.

Why we love this boat…It’s easy to list performance here because it is fun to drive, but the exterior color with great yellow accents inside give the boat a great overall look.

Just being picky…The center pontoon is 36 inches wide, so it would be nice to see the 3-foot by 1-foot opening for the in-floor ski locker a little wider (but inside at nearly 7 feet long it’s plenty big).

Premier 290 Grand Entertainer

What You Need To Know

Being a great entertaining pontoon is just one of the many advantages to this Premier. For starters it has an extra-wide design that allowed the engineers more room to pack key features into it, plus the combination of the PTX hull with twin 300hp outboards help redefine what we consider a “total package” pontoon.

The Highlights

For all that this ‘toon has going for it, it was the joystick docking controls that seemed to earn the most attention. With just a simple movement, anyone can dock like a pro in any condition with this very easy-to-use system. Space won’t allow us to elaborate at this time, but trust us when we say this is an industry-changing feature that we absolutely love.

It’s called the Grand Entertainer for a reason. While we’ve seen wet bar layouts become more and more popular, this fully-loaded bar is like nothing else. Located in the stern, the Sea Grass flooring separates this section from the rest of the boat. You can control the height on the four bar stools that include a foot rest, a “purse hook” and LED blue accent lights. And above the bar is a cabana top that includes 8 glass holders with plastic glasses.

Behind the bar counter is stainless electric fridge, bottle holders on the counter as well as a locking drawer, a large electric sink with a soap dispenser, ice bucket, paper towel holder, bottle opener, stereo controls, etc. The list goes on and on. With the 10-foot wide design we wish there was a little bit more room behind the bar, but other than that we love all the features included with this full bar design.

In the stern is a large swim deck with an integrated three stair, plus three telescopic ladder steps that are built into the PTX tube for easy boarding. For the captain, the elevated fiberglass platform is a nice touch as well as the FlexSteel helm chair that is identical to the first mate chair. At the helm is a Beacon Electronics System that includes a GPS and allows you to control everything from the touch screen console. The dash also includes BRP’s I-command multi-function gauges that are easy to read.

FlexSteel furniture is used throughout, so the U-shaped seating with the removable bow filler seat is as comfortable and as inviting as it looks. Hidden nicely in the port bow chaise is a large pop-up changing room enclosure that can be easily accessed in one movement and stands over 6 feet tall when open. It’s built into the seating and we love that it includes a little cutout so your step to get inside is minimal.

Inspection Notes

There are two 27-inch diameter pontoons with a 36-inch diameter U-shaped center tube that is part of the PTX package. After a close inspection this boat earned high marks for its overall quality construction, unique layout, as well as its fit and finish work. And with the 28-inch tall rails throughout, this is a safe family-friendly boat too that is truly a one-of-a-kind.

Performance Evaluation

With the proven PTX hull we were able to handle this pontoon like it was a 20-foot V-hull boat as we dived into the sharp corners. At full throttle we easily hit the 50 mph mark with the twin Evinrude E-TEC 300hp outboards. Now that’s a lot of power! This Premier is fun to drive and it will surprise you by how well it performs.

Our Take

If you love to entertain and you’re looking for a fully loaded bar that includes everything you need besides the drinks, this Grand Entertainer has it all. Plus she handles great, easy to dock with the Optimus 360 controls and more power than you’re used to.

Qwest LS 820 RLS

What You Need To Know

With new styling for the new model year, we instantly loved the look of this 20-footer when we first saw it tied up at the dock. It’s well built and with Qwest you can always count on its boats being loaded with a ton of great amenities.

The Highlights

When you step onboard, the “retro” two-tone upholstery really catches your eye, but it’s the tall furniture seatbacks that we like the most. The look is great, but being comfortable makes the new seating that much better. Overall there is a clean look and feel to the interior that includes padded Sea Grass flooring and a very open walkway. Qwest pontoons are manufactured by Apex Marine, who we consider to be an industry leader when it comes to compact boats. So if the walkway would have been a little tight on this 8-foot wide model, it would have been understandable. But that’s just one of the reasons why this layout works so well, there is plenty of room to move around.

The elevated helm stand with a tall bucket captain’s chair is part of the SE package and we really like the attention this area commands. Complete with a standard Humminbird 386ci color GPS and full instrumentation, the captain has what he needs within reach including a MP3 port and a media tray for all electronics.

Behind the captain’s chair is a nice bench seat, but directly across from it in the stern is what tends to get a lot of attention. New this year is a rear bar entertainment group that includes four bar stools with storage drawers below the bar top. In the bottom drawer is a removable cooler, which is the perfect spot for it. The stools are good for when you’re cruising along, but when the boat is anchored or at a sandbar, this area is going to become must-have territory as everyone will want to grab a seat at the bar. If we had to be picky, it would be nice to have a sink and faucet to go along with the stern bar setup, but as is we still feel it’s a great option to have.

Other key features include a solid ski/tow bar as well as pop up speakers in the stern that only increase the versatility of this great all-around pontoon.

Inspection Notes

Three 23-inch diameter baffled pontoons are the base of this boat and integrated into the design are splash guards on the nosecones and a full-length keel. Stainless steel fasteners are used and the aluminum riser trim includes a cutout of the Qwest logo, what a great touch.

The Generation II Q3 Triple Tube package includes performance lifting strakes as well as SeaStar hydraulic steering, but we’ll get to how well this ‘toon performed next. We consider this pontoon to be safe and family-friendly, especially considering the tall 25-inch rail height throughout the interior.

Performance Evaluation

Powered with a Suzuki 140hp engine, we were pleasantly surprised with how quick this Qwest moves. At full throttle we came extremely close to the 40 mile per hour mark, but it’s the way this pontoon handles that impressed us the most.

Our Take

Qwest seems to really know how to pack a lot into its boats and the LS 820 RLS is proof of that. From the comfy furniture and high-end helm stand to the performance and versatility, we feel this pontoon has a lot going for it, plus it comes in at a budget-friendly price as well.

Sanpan 2500 Wet Bar

What You Need To Know

There’s entertaining and then there’s smart entertaining and this Sanpan goes the extra mile with key features and a well-thought-out layout. It’s clear to see it was designed and executed by engineers who love to be out on the water.

 The Highlights

The focus of this model is in the stern, so let’s start with the bar area since it will rightfully receive the most attention when you first see this pontoon. Everywhere we looked we found LED lights and in this bar area they really stand out nicely. From the LED lights below to the well-lit cup holders, it would be worth staying out a little later just to have this boat on the water at dusk.

Sanpan was going for a high-end yacht feel with its bar stools and they got it. The stainless stools complete with seatbacks are as comfy as they are functional. Having a portable grill onboard is great for a lot of reasons, but we especially love that there are two designated mounts for it and when you’re not using the grill it cleanly stores below. From the stainless drawers and ample storage areas to the great counter space, this stern area has a lot going for it. Also in the stern is a vinyl deck, massive ski/tow bar and an S-shaped boarding ladder that is extremely easy to use because of its deep design.

The majority of the boat is covered with a Sea Grass decking that is soft on your feet and looks great. We counted 13 speakers onboard and that includes a 10-inch subwoofer and a 750-watt amp that’s all part of the Sony amphitheater sound system. It’s nice the way the speakers are positioned so you get the most out of them; it’s something Sanpan has been doing for years that we really like.

At the elevated helm you’ll find even more LED lighting with the toggle switches and trim on the dash, which helps tie it all in. The Garmin EchoMap 50s colored depth finder is nicely placed between the gauges for easy access and overall we feel the console flows well with the rest of the boat. Worth noting is the new solid table across from the helm that is extremely solid and it doesn’t wobble like other tables we’ve seen. If we had to be picky, the access between the table and the helm chair is a little tight, but there’s still enough room to get by.

Inspection Notes

On the three-pontoon hull, the tubes are 27 inches in diameter with lifting strakes on both sides of the center one and on the inside of the other pontoons. There is also a full-length aluminum underskin that not only helps protect the deck, but improves the performance too.

After a close inspection this boat earned high marks for its fit and finish work as well as quality construction. It’s built the way you would expect a high-end luxury boat to be.

Performance Evaluation

Powered with an Evinrude 250hp E-TEC, if the high-end luxurious galley doesn’t make you smile, the performance surely will. She banks beautifully in the turns and is extremely responsive. At full throttle we reached speeds over 40 miles per hour, but it was how quick she was out of the hole that we enjoyed the most.

Our Take

For cruising, entertaining or just because you deserve a great day out on the water, this Sanpan is loaded with a lot of great amenities and it doesn’t hurt that it’s a lot of fun to drive either.

Starcraft Coastal 2210 OB

 What You Need To Know

Because it is the Coastal edition, this Starcraft is built and designed to thrive in those coastal regions like Texas and Florida. However, there are plenty of great features onboard to help make this deck boat a popular choice for those in several different regions, including lake boaters who can appreciate a high-quality deck boat.

 The Highlights

With the fiberglass design and full liner, it’s ready for saltwater or freshwater use. But what makes it the Coastal version, is a few key options that are included with the package such as stainless steel hardware, pressurized water system with a handheld sprayer and a ski/tow pylon. In fact, the only other option on this boat is snap-in carpeting, which means everything else you see comes standard.

A common concern with some deck boat owners is on most boats you have to step on the seats to gain access inside. Starcraft goes the extra mile by including not only removable cushions for the three different entries, but in the stern the openings include a removable back rest that doubles as a gate. This design creates a very safe and family-friendly layout, especially for those with smaller children.

In the bow is a four-step telescopic ladder that doubles as an anchor locker. There are also recessed docking lights and the two chaise lounges are very inviting. The full wrap-around windshield is a nice added touch, which flows well with the dual helm chairs that include flip-up bolsters.

Forward of the first mate chair is a large changing room enclosure with a fiberglass door and just above is a small sink with faucet. At the helm is a sporty-looking console that includes chrome-accented gauges and LED-lit toggle switches. The console gives you options for future growth by providing room for additional gauges to be added later, but if we had to be picky we’d prefer to see more standard gauges to fill this space. The Infinity stereo is built into the sidewall near the throttle so it doesn’t take up space on the helm console, yet is still fully accessible for the driver.

Also worth noting is the two in-floor storage lockers, the built-in removable cooler storage below the rear bench, as well as a second boarding ladder in the stern.

 Inspection Notes

The modified Dihedral Vee hull uses 24-ounce woven fiberglass with a 6-inch overlap between the hull and deck for enhanced strength. Next is the application of 22 mils high elongated gel coat that really increases the durability.

After a close inspection, this deck boat earned high marks for its fit and finish work and quality of construction. This is a well-thought-out design with great use of space, plus the deep seating area helps earn it a high safety score as well, not to mention the great grab rails that can be found throughout the boat. And it comes standard with Starcraft's Lifetime plus 6 warranty too.

 Performance Evaluation

She’s quick to plane, which only added to her high performance rating. Powered with a Yamaha 200hp outboard, we nearly reached the half century mark at full throttle. She banks well in the sharp turns like a good V-hull boat should and we had a blast cruising around.

 Our Take

You don’t need to be a saltwater boater to love this deck boat. The versatility gives you options, but it’s designed to be a great fit for all regions. Because it is safe for most families, we’d feel confident in recommending it to those in search of a great all-around deck boat.

Starcraft SLS3

What You Need To Know

With the SLS series you have two options with similar layouts—the only difference is the SLS5 is two feet longer. For our test we got behind the wheel of the SLS3 and had to look twice when we saw the large outboard on the back. It’s easy to reach the maximum horsepower rating of 250 for this particular model with the standard third pontoon and HMX performance strakes package, which we’ll get to in a minute. Just know that after driving this ‘toon we were thrilled with the performance.

The Highlights

The new stainless steel, four-step telescoping boarding ladder really catches your eye, so let’s start in the stern. Not only is the ladder easy to use, it almost looks like a piece of art and it flows well with the massive ski/tow bar. Also in the stern is a Sea-Weave deck flooring that is soft on your wet feet as you towel off before coming inside the rear gate.

Two of the most comfortable places to relax can be found in the rear-facing lounges that provide plenty of room to stretch out, but they’re also just as comfortable as a bench seat when you need the extra seating for more people. Also included as standard features are the dual tall-back helm chairs.

At the full fiberglass helm are chrome-accented gauges on the dash panel with lighted toggle switches for easy access. The Infinity stereo is mounted on the side of the helm stand so everyone onboard has access, plus we love the USB 12-volt as well as the MP3 jack for the music lover in your family. Also worth noting is the sink just forward of the helm and the two chaise lounges in the bow. Built into the back of the port lounge is a pop-up changing room that includes a cutout for a portable toilet.

Overall we love the look of the interior with great use of neutral colors like a deep dark grey that is used throughout as an accent color. If we had to be picky, the all-black door that provides storage access below the helm stand seemed out of place. Of course black goes with anything so it’s not a big deal, but there’s not a lot of black onboard to tie in with it. But in no way does it take away from the beautiful high-end look and feel of the interior.

Inspection Notes

Three 25-inch diameter pontoons are the base of this pontoon. The standard HMX package includes a third pontoon with lifting strakes on both sides and lifting strakes on the insides of the two outer pontoons. Translation: she banks beautifully and is a lot of fun to drive. This Starcraft earned high marks for its fit and finish work and overall construction, as well as for its family-friendly safe design. And it comes standard with Starcraft's Lifetime plus 6 warranty too.

Performance Evaluation

The blistering zero to 20mph time of just 4.6 seconds immediately caught our attention. With the High Output Evinrude E-TEC 250hp outboard we reached a top speed of nearly 50mph at full throttle, which of course put big smiles on our faces. She handles well and at no time did we not feel we were in complete control, which again only added to our high safety rating.

Our Take

The Starcraft pontoon as tested has a lot going for it from a design and function perspective. Not only does it look high-end, but it performs well too. Packed with a lot of great “must-have” type amenities, there’s a lot to love on this SLS3.

SunChaser 8522 Entertainer

What You Need To Know

Value never looked so good. As the price of boats in general continues to climb each year, it’s amazing how much is packed into this SunChaser pontoon. True, it’s designed to be an affordable and budget-friendly option, but the amount of standard and optional features included as tested will have you doing a double take when you see the price tag.

The Highlights

The stern area is where a lot of your guests are going to end up because this is where the model gets its name. The Entertainer version of the Classic 8522 includes a rear bar area that features three stools, plus a large built-in cooler table that can double as a livewell. Other key features worth noting in the stern include a four-step boarding ladder as well as an optional ski/tow bar. And really, with the non-skid vinyl flooring in this section, it truly is a good multi-purpose pontoon for those who love to do a little fishing or enjoy having an area that’s easy to clean up. Plus this layout does include rod storage so it’s basically a fishing model disguised as a cruising/entertaining pontoon.

Nothing at the helm would give you any indication that this is an entry-level type of a pontoon. The helm is part of SunChaser’s Executive package that includes an upgraded tilt steering wheel, a full gauge package, upgraded Infinity stereo, LED lighting, plus a raised platform. With the symmetrical dash and easy-to-read gauges, this is by far one of the best value-based consoles we’ve seen.

There are two chaise lounges, including one with a standard changing room built into the back that also includes room below for a portable toilet. As for the furniture, it has been redesigned for the new year and we love the extra detail that went into the design. There are a ton of cup holders onboard and we even found a couple tucked away in the seat bases. It was clearly designed by engineers who spend time on the water and not just at a desk.

Inspection Notes

The two 25-inch diameter chambered pontoons with full keels include Z-channel construction. As expected, the craftsmanship is solid on this SunChaser with all the hidden areas being well-finished. We like the safe, family-friendly design along with the overall layout. Plus it comes standard with SunChaser's Lifetime plus 6 warranty.

From a practical standpoint the Rotocast seat bases are perfect for keeping your storage items dry while offering great seating support. But if we had to be picky, seeing the Rotocast seat bases exposed takes away from the quality vinyl and overall look to the seating. But for the price we feel it’s a great tradeoff.

Performance Evaluation

Evinrude is now offering an outboard line specific to pontoon boats and the 90hp E-TEC is a great fit on this SunChaser. This engine is part of Evinrude’s new Pontoon Series and at full throttle we reached speeds in the mid 20s. Keeping with the value theme, we feel this is a great outboard for this pontoon.

Our Take

Boating is one of the greatest ways to bring a family together and create long-lasting memories. This SunChaser is built for those on a tight budget who still want to enjoy the unique lifestyle that only boating can offer. The Executive helm console is truly loaded with a lot of great features and we love all of the different ways you can use and enjoy the rear bar section.

For those looking for a great all-around pontoon and a price that won’t break the bank, the 8522 Entertainer as tested with the Pontoon Series E-TEC is worthy of a closer look.

Sweetwater Premium Edition 240 SLR

What You Need To Know

With the plush rear-facing lounges in the stern, you might not ever want to drive again. Let someone else take the controls for a change; this is where you’ll want to be on this “take a nap” boat. However, despite how much we love these loungers, there is a lot more to this pontoon that helps make it attractive to buyers.

The Highlights

Rated for up to 15 passengers, there really isn’t a bad seat onboard. In the bow there are two long bench seats with an angled chaise back, but this is only the beginning. Across from the helm is an impressive reclining forward-facing lounge and in the back there are two other identical ones that face out. Each lounge includes great unique storage areas, plus multiple cup holders which make these seats by far the most popular onboard. With the tall armrests and the overall design, we can’t say enough good things about these lounges that beg to be used.

For this year the one-piece fiberglass helm console has been redesigned so the driver has complete access to all of the controls. The two multi-function gauges are easy to see and there is even a 12-volt above the optional Bluetooth Sony stereo. Plus there is even more leg and knee room compared to previous models with this new console that includes the optional raised platform.

Other key options worth noting include the graphics package that gives the exterior a two-tone look with an aggressive flow as well as the large in-floor ski locker. With this additional space in the locker, there are plenty of great places to store all of your gear on this 25-footer.

Inspection Notes

The three 25-inch diameter pontoons are the base of this pontoon that include lifting strakes for better handling, plus a full-length underdeck aluminum skin. There is nearly 21 feet of usable space inside the gates, but if we had to be picky we’d like to see a little more room outside the stern gate. As is there’s just enough room when using the boarding ladder to towel off on the vinyl deck before coming in, but a couple more feet might make boarding a little better.

After a closer inspection, with the tall railing and overall design, this boat earned high marks for being family-friendly and safe, especially for smaller children. There is great craftsmanship throughout the boat and we have no fit and finish issues to report. We consider this to be a well-built pontoon that includes everything you’ll need as-tested.

 Performance Evaluation

It’s an option, but the ski/tow bar will see plenty of good use with the Yamaha 115hp outboard on the back. We nearly hit the 30 mile per hour mark at full throttle, but it was the way this three-logged pontoon handled with the Sea Star hydraulic steering that impressed us the most. Built to be a great cruising pontoon, we feel this Yamaha is a great match for this Sweetwater.

 Our Take

There are plenty of comfortable seats onboard and because of all the comfort this Sweetwater has to offer, no one will want to be left behind on the dock. All pontoons are spacious, but there just seems to be a lot of extra room inside the gates that you can only truly appreciate when you’re out with a full crew for the day.

From the newly designed helm to the posh seating, there’s a lot to love on this Premium Edition from Sweetwater.

Sylvan S5

What You Need To Know

The new S-Series from Sylvan is all about creating sporty pontoons and when you combine its unique RPT tubes with a Mercury Verado Pro 250 engine, you have a winning combination with this S5 version that is sure to equal an exhilarating thrill ride.

The Highlights

Although designed with performance in mind, you could make a strong case for the high-end amenities and creature comforts being the main focus for this S-Series. In the bow there are two extremely comfortable lounges that include fold-down arm rests and we love the two-tone vinyl colors used throughout. For the captain there is a high back helm chair with an identical one for the first mate directly across. However, the place you’ll want to be is in the stern where the two rear-facing lounges are built into the fiberglass bases. The multi-purpose lounges that can also be used as bench seats include LED rope lighting as well as lighted LED cup holders. Below the portside rear lounger is an easily accessible storage compartment and below the other is a well-hidden pop-up changing room. When opened it stands at 6 feet tall, but the overall depth is limited. You will need to step over the fiberglass base to access this enclosure, which isn’t a big deal and having a space-saving feature like this is well worth it.

From inside the gates there is nearly 21 feet of usable space, which means you have plenty of extra room outside the gates on this nearly 27 foot long pontoon for easy boarding. In fact, the area in the stern with the Sea-Weave flooring, 4-step telescopic boarding ladder and optional stainless ski/tow bar give you plenty of room to enter from the water and towel off before coming into the mostly carpeted boat.

As for the helm console, the dash with chrome-accented gauges and toggle switches really adds to the sporty feel Sylvan is going for. One of the few options onboard is the Polk Audio sound system (which we feel is worth the upgrade) as well as the controls for the power bimini top that are easily in reach for the captain.

Inspection Notes

With the Revolutionary Planing Technology tubes you have 27-inch diameter pontoons with a V-cut in the base that allow the ‘toon to get up on plane quickly. On this particular model, a third optional 25-inch diameter pontoon was added.

After a closer inspection, this Sylvan earned high marks for its overall construction as well as fit and finish work. It’s all about the details and we love the extra mile effort that went into this one. Plus we love that it comes standard with Sylvan's Lifetime plus 6 warranty.

Performance Evaluation

Unbelievable is the best way to describe the performance of this new S-Series Sylvan. Powered with a Mercury Verado Pro 250 FourStroke, we were pleasantly surprised by how sharp this ‘toon was able to dive into the corners. The zero to 20 mph time of just 4.2 seconds gives you a small glimpse to what the RPT tubes are all about. At full throttle we reached speeds in the mid 40s, but it’s the way this Sylvan handles that we liked the most.

Our Take

This is where style, performance and amenity-packed features—including a comfortable layout—come together to form a great all-around pontoon. It’s a high-end model that includes a well-executed design that was clearly engineered by those who spend time on the water and know what a great boat should look like.

Why we love this boat…It not only looks sporty, but it handles like a sport pontoon should. This new Sylvan is fun to drive and packed with a lot of great features.

Just being picky…There is a lot of grey and black used throughout the boat, but with a sporty pontoon like this we wouldn’t mind seeing an accent color to match the performance feel.

Tahoe Vista 2285 Cruise

 What You Need To Know

Tahoe found a way to pack a lot of great features into this 23-footer with just the right balance of standard features and options. In fact, as tested, it really has everything that you need including plenty of horsepower.

 The Highlights

From the Deco 2 two-tone aluminum walls to the black and grey Matrix 50 vinyl, this Vista Cruise has an inviting feel to it both inside and out. Even the silver Faux Teak vinyl flooring helps the flow of the design. We love this high-end flooring for not only looks, but it makes for easy cleanup as well.

One of the many unique features on this Tahoe is the “flow through” ventilation storage space below the seat cushions. This design not only gives you more storage room because of the aluminum bases, but access is easier too. Speaking of storage, with the large in-floor ski locker that is over 7 feet long inside, there are plenty of great places to store your gear on this boat. Even the space below the rear, three-quarter sundeck could be used for storage box if needed, but we kind of like the ease and the size of the changing room in this spot. The enclosure includes a latching door and, once open, the pop-up curtain stands over 5 feet tall. Plus as an added bonus, there is even a bench seat inside that makes changing a whole lot easier.

We love the raised platform for the helm station, as well as the reclining helm chair for the captain. The automotive-style dash includes a Jensen stereo that is Bluetooth capable, Auxiliary and USB ports, a 12-volt outlet and a small drainable storage compartment that is ideal for your phone or electronics.

In the stern is an optional ski/tow bar, plus a three-step boarding ladder for easy access from the water. Other key features worth noting include the polished stainless corner castings, full rubrail with inserts and lights below and a quick-release bimini frame that doesn’t require any pins to lock it in.

 Inspection Notes

For added durability, there are full-length risers, inside and out, that connect the 25-inch diameter pontoons to the frame which incorporates  .190 hat-shaped cross members to add strength to the overall heavy-duty construction The Waveglider Performance Package provides a third pontoon with two lifting fins per pontoon for a total of six.  From inside the bow gate to the rear bench seat there is nearly 15 feet of usable deck space. Our inspection crew found no sharp edges and everything in the hidden areas are all well-finished, earning this toon a high craftsmanship score.

 Performance Evaluation

When you combine SeaStar hydraulic steering, the Waveglider Performance Package and a Yamaha 225hp four-stroke outboard, you have a recipe for a lot of fun. With a surprising zero to 20 mph time of just over four seconds and a top speed near the half century mark, there’s no telling what kind of fun you can have with this Tahoe. Just cruising around put a big smile on our faces.

 Our Take

With the safe, family-friendly design we feel confident recommending this Tahoe to a wide range of users. She has the power to pull tubers and wakeboards so those with older children will love it. But the layout and design is also inviting for those who just want to cruise or entertain with or without the smaller kids. It’s a well-designed boat where nothing appears to be an afterthought. It’s a solid built ‘toon that, with all the amenities and features included, is sure to please everyone onboard.

Why we love this boat…From the colors to the overall design, we just love the layout and the feel of this Tahoe that, as tested, has a lot going for it.

Weeres 200 Angler

What You Need To Know

When Ambrose Weeres founded Weeres Pontoons in 1952, the farmer couldn’t have envisioned just how far his original and simple idea would advance over the years. For those looking for a solid fishing-specific pontoon, the 200 Angler has a layout that would have made Ambrose himself proud to own.

The Highlights

For all of the specific features and amenities geared towards fishing, this really is a dual-purpose pontoon that would be great for cruising as well. For starters, we love the unique helm stand that includes an off-set gauge panel that is balanced perfectly with a GPS fish finder. The dark wood panel is a nice added touch as well and the Jensen stereo, complete with Bluetooth capabilities and USB and I-pod ports, gives you plenty of options for your music.

Also worth noting is the comfortable furniture that is built in-house that includes unique cushion hinges that actually provide two different ways to access the storage compartments below. Below the three-quarter sundeck is a pop-up enclosure that stands 6 feet tall when open and it could double as a storage box if extra space is needed. With four gates on this model, boarding the boat from any location will be easy and with the large four-step ladder with tall handholds in the stern, gaining access from the water will be simple too.

Obviously the main focus of the 200 Angler is fishing and that’s why the plush fold-down fishing seats really caught our attention. Each is very comfortable and we especially love the fishing areas in the bow that include tackle storage trays in each of the corners.

In the stern, the two fishing chairs are divided by a large aerated livewell that includes a 12-volt outlet, ruler for measuring your catch, as well as two rod holders. We would like to have seen rod holders in the bow and maybe a designated area for rod storage, but for all the boat that you get at this price, we realize we’re just being picky.

For the majority of the boat the rails stand at 28 inches tall, which is a great family-friendly height. In the stern the rails are a little bit lower, but that’s to be expected on a fishing model pontoon. There are only a couple of options on this boat and we’re glad they were included. The vinyl floor (that really does look like carpet) is a must for a good fishing model and the optional trolling motor plate that is rated for up to a 50hp engine is also a great addition. The larger diameter pontoons are also worth the upgrade that helps give this ‘toon better stability.

Inspection Notes

The two 25-inch diameter round pontoons are the base of this 20-footer and are made of .90-gauge aluminum. There is a keel on the multi-chambered pontoons with fully-welded end caps that are stamped and domed for added strength. Overall this ‘toon earned high marks for its quality fit and finish work as well as for the layout and design.

Performance Evaluation

With the 90hp four-stroke from Honda, we were pleasantly surprised at just how quick this Weeres jumps out of the hole. She turns nice and flat in the controlled turns and handles really well.

Our Take

This 200 Angler is the ideal compromise for the family who loves to fish a lot, but also recognizes the need to just cruise sometimes and be out on the water with the kids. Packaged with a powerful 90hp outboard, there is a lot of value in this “toon as tested that we feel a lot of people are going to love.
