Ok, a crab is not a fish but it is fishing, I did not take the deck boat and don't have a pontoon boat. Our son and I took the jon boat crabbing one evening last month. We got nice mess of blue crabs in a couple of hours and cooked them up on the back porch. Life is GOOD, no matter what kind of boat you are in!

Trolling Motor 2004 Crest Caribbean Pontoon

After lurking for quite some time, I decided to join. Here is my
first post.... We have a 22 foot 2004 Crest Caribbean with a 115
outboard that we use to cruise around our reservoir.

Cruising is fun but fishing is better. So, I would like to equip
the pontoon to troll for crappie and striped bass as well as fish
shallow waters in and around the stumps and pads.

I would like to improve this pontoon by adding a trolling motor and
rod holders to allow for better fishing. I will probably go with
the Driftmaster rod holders. I have tried plastic rod holders. The
square rails and tight fit of the seats against the sides limit
attaching the plastic rod holders. The ski tow bar has large
diameter too large to clamp on.

The problem with the trolling motor is that I do not want mess up
the rails and lines of the boat.

Any ideas on how best to mount the trolling motor?

Thanks in advance.

6:00am getting ready to launch the toon and an old gentleman tells me he was fishing for some blue gil and his pole fell in the water and had drifted about 200 yards off shore. He wondered If we could pick it up for him? Not a problem. It was very visable, cork handle sitting up in the water. Once we got close it seem to be moving and not with the current. Had to make a number of approaches to the thing to fish it out. pulled it out of the water and felt a tug on the still submerged line. hauled it on board to find a 20lb Cat on the end of the line. Too funny. brought the pole and fish back to the dock to the applause of the 20 or so folks all fishing and handed the oldtimer the pole and his 20lb cat. He thanked us and said, "damn, I wanted blue gil for dinner." but he took the cat anyway. Turned out that was our biggest catch of the day.

Not sure how many of you are in VA or fish the James River, but I just thought I would give a heads up on the trophy catfishing situation. Things are HOT right now. It's a couple of weeks before the spawn gets going and the cats are feeding like crazy right now. Last week we caugt big cats going 45, 31, 34, and 38 next trip out I landed at least 20 cats ranging from a couple of pounds on up to a 29lbr fishing just 2 rods by myself and only using small live shad. Night before last we landed cats 57,33,33,20, and 21 with a bunch of smaller cats up to the mid teens thrown in. If you live near the james and like to catfish now is the time to go. The bite will drop way off in a couple of weeks once spawn starts. Remember to CPR those big fish too.

I need advice or feedback on rodholders; not storage type, but holders for rods in use. I'm looking for something to hold rods for bottom fishing and either another set at the stern rail for trolling OR a more easily moved holder that can be used for both. Either way, it must be flush with the rails or easily removable so I can still use my cover. Thanks!
