The BoatU.S. Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water is offering grants of up to $4,000 to local community organizations and nonprofit groups to help make waterways safer for recreational boaters.

Nearly $50,000 in grant funding is available. The deadline to apply is Nov. 1, and grants will be awarded in January 2007.

In the past 17 years the foundation has awarded nearly $700,000 in safety grants to organizations that develop innovative projects to promote safety. Past projects included literature on the effects of boating under the influence of alcohol and boat ramp signs about free safety checks.

Interested groups may download an application from www.boatus.com/foundation.
