NOW-Next Year

Published in the September 2008 Issue September 2008

You can spot the new year On the horizon when the last leaves have fallen, the Christmas commercials start (two obnoxious days before Halloween) and heating bills are starting to rise. While the temperature may be dropping outside, the temperature inside the world of pontoon and deck boats is red-hot. The final quarter of the year isn't in the books yet, but that doesn't mean the new year isn't already here! We've done our homework by gathering all the new models for 2009 for your reading pleasure, but we'll warn you that it feels like a sauna. After all, these newbies are steaming with new features, new standards and new reasons to trade in your older boat for the top of the line. Somebody get me some ice!

Apex Marine

Can you say compact luxury toon? Get set to check out Apex Marine's full line of compact pontoon boats. This line is perfectly suited for electric propulsion. Apex teamed up with several leading electric outboard manufacturers to bring the widest selection of electric-powered pontoon boats to the scene for 2009.

One such model is the Qwest Model LS 7516 Cruise. This compact luxury pontoon is filled with many amenities and loaded with comfort. Its smaller profile is easy to maneuver and is perfectly sized for small families or groups. Leave your gas worries behind and cruise in comfort on the deluxe upholstery while listening to the sounds from the JBL stereo system. The Qwest LS Cruise is also equipped with a front layback seat, partial sundeck, fiberglass helm stand with integrated depth finder and stainless steel trimmings.

Aqua Patio

The engineers at Godfrey Marine must have logged a lot of hours when designing the latest Aqua Patio 240 I/O Elite. From a cosmetic standpoint the colored rail skins, new graphics, chrome raised logos and the added color accents helps give this boat an extremely high-end feel. But it's the high output amphitheater sound that will impress you the most. The days of having speakers mounted on the floor are gone, as the Godfrey team brought in professionals to make sure the sound was near perfect on this pontoon boat.

And to top it all off the multi-position rear seat converts two back-to-back lounges into either a flat sundeck or a comfy lounge seat that is guaranteed to be the most popular seat on board. The beautiful sundeck is not only attractive, but also quite functional with the integrated boarding ladder and hidden ski/tow pylon.

At full throttle with a MerCruiser 350 Mag MPI engine this boat is capable of reaching speeds close to the half-century mark. At a cruising RPM of 3000, the engine sips about 6.9 gallons per hour. The base of this Elite model that is also available for the Sanpan line is a 27-inch center pontoon with two outside pontoons that are 25 inches in diameter. This design allows the pontoon to turn a lot sharper, especially in those tight turns.

A new style elliptical ski/tow bar has been added as well and it's just one of the many new standard features that also includes the leading edge deck stripe and the RTM extended platform.

Starting with this model year, Sedona pontoons will be marketed as a series under the Bennington product brand. This entry-level line will continue to showcase value at an entry-level price, while including that Bennington pride and attention to detail into each Sedona.

Hurricane

With so many new models for 2009, it's hard to know where to begin so we'll kick it off with the all-new fishing series. Hurricane deck boats have always been known for versatility, but until Godfrey Marine conducted a survey the manufacturer didn't realize that 87 percent of its owners buy with the intent to fish. The next obvious step was to introduce the Hurricane Fishing Series, which includes five new models for this upcoming year. From center consoles to dual, this line of boats is sure to catch on.

The new Hurricane FunDeck 216 RE and the FunDeck 236 blend comfort and performance when the fiberglass hull of a deck boat and the style of a pontoon come together. These two new models have the Sweetwater furniture for added comfort and come with a standard ski/tow bar. Style is at a premium on this deck boat by featuring sporty color and graphics, new colored hulls, tailored upholstery and elongated, curved, anodized rails. Based on three decades of experience, the traditional modified deep V quick-planing Category 5 hull maximizes efficiency by using less horsepower to reach your desired speed.

Continuing the tradition of Hurricane's quest for new product introductions, the FunDeck GS 200 delivers a smooth-riding, versatile platform for a full day on the water. Following the lead of the all-new SunDeck series introduced last year, innovative crossover engineering creates a wide open floor plan and generous storage, without sacrificing shallow draft.

Rinker

No one could possibly have predicted how successful the new Rinker 248 was going to be when it was first introduced last year. Well, almost no one. Clearly the engineers had high hopes for this deck boat model and for 2009 the 228 and 268 Captiva boats are being introduced.

The 22-foot version is loaded with family-friendly features that help make this boat ideal for cruising, skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, fishing and even scuba diving. The versatility is endless, which is why this line has become so popular for Rinker.

Known for manufacturing everything from 44-foot cruisers to 19-foot bow riders, Rinker has been a strong influence in the boating industry for years and that expertise and experience perfectly transfers over to the Captiva line of deck boats.

The new Rinker 268 Captiva I/O deck boat is ready for action and there is plenty of room, storage and performance to spare on this 26-footer.

With the standard swim platform, convenient stainless steel bow and transom boarding ladders-access to this pleasure boat is just a step away. This new line of deck boats incorporates the ever-popular "R" Package, as well as the addition of an available anchor windlass. The stainless steel speaker covers and MP3/iPod stereo input is a nice standard feature as well.

Sea Ray Boats

When it comes to high-end deck boats, Sea Ray continues to manufacture beautiful vessels year after year. The 2009 model year is no different as the 210 Sundeck and the 230 Sundeck are being launched for Sea Ray's 50th anniversary.

With the standard integral/extended swim platform, the 210 stretches to 22-feet in length and is packed with more features than should be legally possible for a boat this size. Snap-in carpet, head compartment with portable toilet, Sony CD stereo, keyless dash and SmartCraft diagnostics are just a sample of the key standard features on this model.

With the MerCruiser Bravo III 5.0L 260hp engine, the 4,776-pound boat (dry weight) can reach speeds over 40 miles per hour.

As for the 230 Sundeck with the optional 350 Mag engine from MerCruiser, top speed at full throttle was recorded at 47.8 for the 4,850 pound (dry weight) deck boat. The extra two feet compared to the 210 version gives you a lot of the same key features, plus a transom seat that converts into a sun pad. This also can be converted into a rear-facing bench seat that is ideal for the sandbar.

With this 24-foot Sundeck you can also upgrade to the optional water sports tower with speed control that will draw wakeboarders of all ages to this boat. For more information on either of the two new Sundeck models or any of the other popular Sea Ray models, visit www.searay.com or call 800-SRBOATS.

South Bay is bursting at the seams with new models for 2009, starting with the Sanibel 500 Series, which sports a new aerodynamic instrument pod and windshield with raised dash panel, switch panel and radio panel. The Jensen waterproof AM/FM radio is MP3 and iPod ready. Standard features on select models include changing room and rod locker, and all have tach, volt, fuel and trim gauges. On all F and FCR models, you'll find standard a new starboard fishing center and rod locker, or go with a livewell seat insert and horizontal rod holders on the FC model. Triple tube features include a 54-gallon OB fuel tank (or 51-gallon on the I/O) and electric operated I/O access. In the 800 Series, additional triple tube standard features include ACTIA gauges (digital, not analog) and Garmin Color GPS, an hour gauge, and of course, you get the same quality Jensen waterproof AM/FM MP3-ready stereo with four speakers as you do on the 600 and 700 series. Finally, but definitely not least of which, is the 900 Series. Among many other things, you get your choice of rail panel colors, granite kidney table, transom washdown, dual battery switch and charger, stainless steel everything (pop-up bow cleats, corners, rails braces and cupholders), Bay Star hydraulic steering, 30-inch granite helm with molded sink and more. On the 700, 800 and 900 series, ravishing furniture accent colors will make your pontoon the classiest boat on the water, ranging from Deep Sea Blue and Sierra Sunrise to Raven Red and Lightnin' Yellow and more. Starcraft Marine

The Indiana-based manufacturer has high expectations for the upcoming year with its completely redesigned pontoon line. From the entry-level Classic, to the Limited mid-line series to its luxury Majestic pontoons, Starcraft has you covered including more fishing models.

Priced low, yet not shy on amenities is the best way to classify the Classic Series for 2009. Complete with a new dash console, this line includes new furniture configurations, rear-entry layout with boarding ladder, plus an all-new transom.

The Limited Series comes standard with painted panels and the new helm console has a built-in area to include an optional GPS unit. A new transom, chrome rub rail and a raised Starcraft emblem are just a few examples of the upgrades made to this mid-level line.

There's a reason it's called the high-end line and the Majestic doesn't disappoint.

The stepped hull design allows the boat to have more power with less cavitation and the ski boat-inspired dash console is loaded with a full gauge package. Tahoe

For 2009, Tahoe is introducing the brand-new Tahoe 215 I/O, a deck boat with fabulous looks and fish and ski functionality. It's tough enough to take on big waters, yet nimble enough to troll in the shallows. Regardless of whether you catch a fish, you'll turn heads with sleek-looking colors such as Black Cherry, Blueberry, Millennium Red, Onyx and Citron Yellow.

Anglers will appreciate the wide bow fishing platform with molded, non-skid surface, complete with two removable fishing chairs, anchor locker and folding boarding ladder. You'll go straight to your favorite spot with a built-in compass and Lowrance depth finder at the console. Rod storage is conveniently placed on the starboard gunwale, and an aerated livewell will keep the fish fresh. When fishing in one place isn't good enough, the 215 is pre-wired for a trolling motor.

An entertainment center on the port side includes a freshwater tank and cooler with drain, as well as a pull-out sprayer to keep grime outside the boat. You'll need the sprayer if you bring kids along-they're attracted to mud like little pigs, and they'll be sure to be in and out of the boat with help from an oversized aft swim platform. Moms will be happy to know that the swim platforms include insulated storage, folding boarding ladder, drink holders as well as a fishing seat base if she decides to show dad up. Life jacket storage is aplenty, with space beneath the console and inside the floor locker, with cylinder hinge handles.

When it's time to stay in the boat and relax, the AM/FM/CD player with MP3 plug and Sirius capabilities will keep you entertained, using four Jensen speakers that aren't directed at your ankles-they're facing up so your ears won't have to strain to hear the music. If you want drink holders, you got `em-you'll find a whopping 11 on this boat. For more information, call 888-842-8246 or visit www.tahoesportboats.com.
