It's Evinrude Time

Published in the April 2009 Issue April 2009

Sixty seconds equals a minute. Sixty minutes becomes an hour. Twenty-four hours morphs into a full day. With seven days, you've got yourself a week. Once 52 weeks have lapsed, you've seen a full year go by. So what are you doing in the course of 52 weeks? You've got 52 weekends a year to work around the house, catch up with deadlines at work and spend time with family. Is everything getting an appropriate balance, or is the office tugging you far more than anything else? The kids aren't getting any younger. Use the weekend to recharge your batteries by spending quality time out on the water.

Time is exactly what Evinrude has behind them-now over 100 years, to be exact. With a full century of experience, Evinrude is poised to make the next century even better, helping you and your family spend more time on the water.

For real power, turn to the HO (High Output) Series from Evinrude. Blurring the line between boating and aviation, the HO Series outboards push the limits just about as far as the industry recommends. But they come with everything it takes to handle it, like a beefed-up lightning gear case that withstands the higher torque and RPMs, special vacuum formed gears with super-pure, extra-tough metallurgy and stiffer engine mounts for superior handling and control at high speeds-all performance, all the time-right down to the tricked-out graphics, which, of course, will be pretty much be a blur anyway.

115HP and 130hp

These completely new 1.7-liter V4 engines were designed for maximum performance. Both are equipped with an all-new lost foam exhaust housing, a new exhaust valve and a newly-designed upper motor cover. And like the entire E-TEC outboard lineup, they provide maximum power and performance with less parts than a four-stroke, which translates into less weight on the transom.

The new lost foam exhaust housing on both the 115 HO and 130 add to the durability of the already low maintenance E-TEC formula. And the new exhaust valve not only increases durability by resisting carbon buildup, but also helps to increase the power of the engine. The newly-designed motor cover redirects and more efficiently cools the airflow, which also means more power. Take all of these benefits plus a true 50-amp alternator to run all of your gadgets, and you have the ideal motor suited for the transom of your pontoon.

It costs less to operate than older technologies too. The engine management system, along with ball-in-plunger injectors, provide excellent fuel economy. This system calculates the precise amount of fuel needed at any given moment, whether at idle or full throttle, so not a drop of fuel is wasted.

250 HO and 300hp

The new 250 HO and 300hp work horses both offer a completely new 3.44L displacement engine, the largest in their class. Both are equipped with a new cylinder block, crankshaft, larger tuned-exhaust and one-piece inner exhaust, and both provide maximum power and performance with

less parts and cooler operating temperatures. The multi-point oiling system provides pinpoint oiling of cylinder walls, crankshaft and connecting rods to maximize lubrication and minimize oil consumption. A fast rise Inductive Ignition System provides exceptionally smooth running and no spark plug fouling operating, even after countless hours of trolling. And better yet, it runs on 87 octane fuel.

The 250 HO features a new Lightning (1.71:1/.58 ratio) gear case with low-water intakes, a robust gear set, maximum factory-tuned horsepower and new HO graphics. The 250 HO is available in 20-foot and 25-foot blue and 20-foot white models. The 300hp features a new SLE Magnum (Straight Leading Edge) gear case and is available in 25-foot and 30-foot white, standard and counter rotation for inshore and offshore saltwater rigs. Perfect for pontoon applications is the 20-foot white, standard rotation model. At up to 290 pounds lighter than the competition, this outboard will get the most out of any boat.

New Evinrude features include:

Tiller Handles. Two unique handles are offered for the 2009 season. First, the tiller with micro-vertical adjustability and three-position lateral adjustment, allowing user comfort in all applications. Pushbutton/key starting along with throttle trim and tilt are conveniently located to provide total control and user convenience. And a large, forward-mounted gearshift reduces fatigue normally associated with tiller applications and a longer length handle provides more leverage for higher horsepower applications-available as standard equipment on 40-60hp models and will fit any model from 40-115hp.

SLE Magnum Gear Case. Found on all 30-foot V6 models and select 20-foot and 25-foot models, the new SLE Magnum gear case significantly increases water flow to the engine. Cooling ability and capacity have been increased by the addition of water inlets in the nose of the gear case. These additional inlets provide ample cooling water, particularly in the multi-engine rigs or obstructed applications. A new housing includes a straight leading edge that easily sheds weeds and an improved hydrodynamic design directs water to the strut-mounted inlets for improved water flow to the engine, even in weedy or compromised conditions.

Lightning gear case. Durability and overall performance: the new lightning gear case delivers both. A 1.71:1 (.58) gear ratio is standard on all Evinrude E-TEC 250 HO and 225 HO models. A ratio that not only reduces gear loading for improving long-term durability and reliability, it also allows for higher engine mounting height and faster top speeds on performance applications. In addition, these new gears are made of a high-grade, 9310, vacuum-arch re-melt (VAR) material, ensuring consistent quality and superior strength throughout the entire gear. Perfectly matched to Evinrude's latest line of Raker II, Cyclone and Rebel propellers, the 1.171:1 Lightning gear case offers reliable performance no matter what the conditions.

Advanced Fuel Injectors. Increased fuel economy, better overall performance and three-star CARB emissions is what the new Evinrude E-TEC fuel injector has to offer.

This technology injects precise quantities of fuel into each cylinder at up to 100 times a second, and is available in every engine size Evinrude has to offer. This year, even more high-quality stainless steel components were added to the "ball-in-plunger" design, providing even better fuel efficiency and increased performance over the life of the engine.

Fast Rise Inductive Ignition. Fast Rise Inductive Ignition combines the quick rise time of Capacitor Discharge Ignition with the long spark duration of inductive ignition. The result is longer spark plug life, less chance of plug fouling, more consistent running quality and a smoother running engine. Even in the harshest conditions and duty cycles, spark plug life can last up to three times longer than those in competitive engines.
