Ga. officers use pontoon boat to catch fleeing suspect

July 2010 News

AUGUSTA - Richmond County sheriff's officers say a man deputies were pursuing has been captured after he jumped off Augusta's 13th Street Bridge into the Savannah River.

Sgt. Robbie Silas says 43-year-old Steven Floyd Smith was seen Thursday morning leaving a house where drug activity was suspected.

Silas says a police chase began that led to Interstate 20 and over the bridge. He says the vehicle stopped at the bridge's highest point and Smith got out and jumped into the river.

Silas says deputies were offered the use of a private pontoon boat and used it to follow Smith and eventually pulled him from the water.

Deputies say Smith is facing multiple traffic charges, and that the vehicle was stolen.
