Cruise for KOP `dream event' on Lake Wylie

October 2010 News

Monique Boekhout of Lake Wylie and founder of Kenya Orphanage Project called the Oct. 10 lake cruise "a smashing hit."

About 75 people jumped aboard nine pontoon boats taking an evening ride to raise more than $5,000 for the project.

"I have been involved in many fundraising projects in my life, but this was definitely of the nicest," Boekhout said. "Everything clicked - perfect weather, great boat captains, enthusiastic participants, outstanding food and very generous sponsors, not to mention a team of dedicated volunteers to work with."

The event also included a dinner provided by Jo Jo China Bistro of Charlotte and a silent auction.

"It was a dream event," Boekhout said, "and we must do it again next year."

Again, she said, the community was generous.

"As the Kenyan children always say, `Asante sana,' or `Thank you,'" Boekhout said.
