Makeover green-lighted for Fort Lauderdale Boat Show site

June 2011 News
FORT LAUDERDALE - The Bahia Mar resort will get a $250 million makeover, as the city gave the green light to developers.

The sponsors of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show gave support to the developer, LXR Resorts, in the endeavor. The site is the show's home and will remain as such.

The Bahia Mar will be renovated. New area construction will include a high-rider Waldorf Astoria hotel, a waterfront park and promenade. The project involves public lands, and there was some public criticism of the redevelopment.

According to an article in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the plans represent a series of compromises over the past year. The original plan called for two condo towers, which were dropped while more public access was added.
