Old Florida Charm

Published in the May 2013 Issue May 2013

Steinhatchee Landing is like no other resort I’ve experienced and is located 85 miles southeast of Tallahassee in a small fishing village just three miles upstream from the Gulf of Mexico. The lush, 35-acre grounds offer 31 Victorian, Florida Cracker and Georgian architectural-style cottages (15 of which are pet-friendly) for rent in an off-the-beaten-path setting that is truly unique and reeks “Old Florida” both literally (at low tide) and figuratively in the setting and attitude of the place and those who work there.

As boaters, we loved it. Dockage for craft up to 28 feet is free, and after launching at the ramp on site, we tied the NauticStar to a dock in front of our cottage, which was fully equipped to cook our daily catch—be it finfish or shellfish. What’s more, two local restaurants—Fiddler’s and Roy’s—will cook your catch for you if you prefer not to prepare it yourself.

The resort is so ‘under the radar’ that the Carter clan of past-President-Jimmy-and-brother-Billy-fame have rented the entire complex for extended family reunions, and celebrity-wise you never know who you might bump into over breakfast, strolling the grounds or walking the docks, whether they own a cottage there or are visiting to enjoy a relaxed getaway in a special place.
