Hurricane SunDeck Sport 203OB

September 2013 Boat Test Monday Brady L. Kay

What You Need To Know

Hurricane has added to its family of 20-footers with this brand new, sleek-profile deck boat. Both the hull and the deck are brand new for 2013 and our first impression was a good one. Packed with plenty of great amenities, we couldn't wait to get this SunDeck out on the water.

The Highlights

Honestly, it's kind of hard to believe how much the Indiana-based manufacturer was able to get on this 20-footer. The open layout gives you the impression that you're on a much larger boat. Plus the little touches like the six cleats when you'd normally find just four on a boat this size helps too.

Up front on the bow platform, the deep port anchor locker and the starboard ladder compartment have been spaced out just enough that you can freely stand between the two without standing on a lid. With the Fishing Package you gain a fishing seat that mounts on the bow, along with a bow livewell and rod storage clips, plus a trolling motor harness kit that includes the plug.

But the one optional feature that catches your attention is the Bamboo snap-in carpet. The non-spongy, light-weight carpet is made of plastic so it won't absorb water and it really does give the boat a high-end feel to it.

At the helm is a very attractive automotive-style dash console that includes the optional Lowrance FishFinder that is mounted in a great, easy-to-view location. Also at the helm is a Sony stereo, 12-volt outlet and a MP3 jack. The helm stand uses a new door that shuts tight and appears to be waterproof. However, without a drain inside, this fiberglass compartment could trap water if it did get in.

The bucket helm chair for the captain is a solid design, and we especially like the Carbon Fiber Pearl vinyl used throughout the boat that is designed to reflect the heat, not absorb it like some material does. The cushions on the seats have been widened as well for added comfort.

Across from the helm is a convenience center with optional pressurized spray nozzle and sink with easy-access cooler storage below. Other key features worth noting are the second stainless boarding ladder in the stern, the pop-up/retracting heavy-duty ski/tow pylon, as well as the large drainable Rotocast storage area in the aft that is perfect for wet ski rope and other wet items you don't want in your boat.

Inspection Notes

The fiberglass V-hull is well-constructed and overall we consider this to be a safe, family-friendly design. After a closer inspection the only two items we feel would really complete this deck would be a locking glove box and some type of a trash receptacle. But as-tested with a mix of great standard amenities with a few key options, this specific boat is ready for some family fun on the water.

Performance Evaluation

This new Hurricane hull is very quick and had us up on plane in just seconds. While the top speed of over 40 miles per hour is quite impressive with the Yamaha 150, it's the way she dives into those tight corners that impressed us most. With the optional SeaStar hydraulic steering, this Hurricane handles like a deck boat should. Plus, credit Yamaha for creating a very quiet four-stroke that seems to be the right fit for this 20-footer.

Final Thoughts

For those looking for an aggressive, fun and sporty deck boat, this Hurricane has a lot going for it. The fishing features almost go unnoticed at first, which is ideal when you're looking for a multi-purpose boat.
