The Suzuki Choice

Choosing your outboard

February 2015 Feature

Suzuki's marine division has made great strides in innovation with it outboard selection. Whether you're looking for a low- to mid-range outboard for leisurely travel across the water, or you are in need of some extra muscle to make wake, Suzuki has an arsenal of motors to suit whatever needs you may have. On top of the amazing selection Suzuki has already established, the engine manufacturer recently came up with a few more choices that will surely have you doing a double take and reconsidering what engine you decide to power off with this season.

DF40A–DF90A

In the lower horsepower range, Suzuki offers five different outboards that include the DF40A, DF50A, DF60A, DF70A and DF90A. Each subsequent engine continuously offers a little more power, giving boaters in the market for a lower powered outboard a wide range of variety in possible power. Each of these outboards offers a multi-point sequential electronic fuel injection system, remote steering with a tiller being optional, power trim and tilt and much more. With a lean burn control system, these outboards come just about as fuel efficient as you can get.

For the fisherman, the low range outboards also offer a Suzuki troll mode system, so creeping over to your secret spot can be done without the fuss of buying an additional trolling motor, but if you insist, Suzuki has you covered there too. Any one of these outboards can drastically change the way you perform in the water. Whether you're trying to creep up on that prize fish, or you're looking to mosey through the water for a lazy day of relaxation, you can't go wrong here.

DF115A–DF175

Meeting more of a mid-range criteria, the DF115A, DF140A, DF150 and DF175 horsepower outboards can suit those looking for a little extra speed, but not for a premium price tag. As with the lower range of engines, each of these outboards utilizes a multi-point electronic fuel injection system, but offers a little more with the power of four-cylinders.

As the power begins to go up on Suzuki's outboards, so does the level of technology that's installed. Equipped with an offset driveshaft, two-stage gear reduction system and a variable valve timing system, these larger outboards begin to offer buyers a little extra bang for their buck. With the additional perk of being able to choose between a metallic black and cool white paint scheme, Suzuki owners will find they have a little more than just a choice in horsepower.

DF200–DF250

This is where the power of Suzuki performance begins to take a steep climb. For boaters in need of some thrill, each of these V6 engines has more than what you need. Offering everything that can be found in the lower horsepower models with the addition of key features like a low oil pressure caution indicator, owners get all of the same great perks with a little additional safety.

The DF200, DF225 and DF250 are each a 24-valve DOHC engine platform that provides enough power to get your heart racing just as fast as your boat.

DF250SS–DF250AP

For hot rod enthusiasts, why not fit your pontoon or deck boat with the same kind of power you throw into your car? The DF250SS and DF250AP kick up the power a few extra notches for boaters who can't get enough horses. The DF250AP also adds a large number of top-of-the-line features to give owners extra control. Equipped with Suzuki selective rotation, precision control system, an O2 sensor feedback control system, a spherical bore throttle body and so much more, this specially designed outboard doesn't leave a lot to the imagination.

DF300AP

Being Suzuki's flagship outboard, the DF300AP has everything the boater could want or need out of his engine. This monstrous outboard even offers a troll mode, so it meets even the strictest criteria for power and versatility. Worried about the fuel efficiency of such a powerful motor? Don't be. The DF300AP offers Suzuki lean burn control system, which help mitigate excessive fuel use and with several early warning systems equipped onboard, the DF300AP will certainly give the inexperienced and veteran boaters security and peace of mind, no matter what the situation. If there was ever an ultimate outboard on the market, this one would take the prize every time.

New For You

Pontoon boaters know that heavy boat needs a little extra push to get through the water. Suzuki understands that, that's why they've engineered the DF50 and 60AV models, which have been equipped with a high energy rotation system. This revolutionary system gives these two outboards the ability to move through water at a lower speed comfortably and efficiently.

Many outboards on the market, including Suzuki's, have a lot more horsepower, but these outboards give that extra muscle needed to get your pontoon boat moving with ease.

Both models were based on Suzuki's DF140A model. Powered with a 2.42:1 gear ratio, turning a larger 14-inch diameter propeller, this proven system has shown a 42 percent improvement in reverse thrust when compared to the standard DF60A. This sort of control is essential for maneuvering at lower speeds and in confined places. This sort of control could mean the difference between a frustrating day of a misbehaving pontoon and an easy, smooth-sailing day on the lake.

Another addition for boaters this year is Suzuki's precision maneuvering joystick control system. Make your boat the Cadillac of the lake with smooth as butter controls from this amazing joystick. Steering wheels have been the standard in turning and direction for years, but the simplicity and control found in a joystick controller takes all of the hassle out of steering, indefinitely.

The Bottom Line

Whatever you're looking for in the outboard market, Suzuki has exactly what you're looking for. From low power to incredibly high, Suzuki's outboard selection offers not only an all-encompassing horsepower selection, but some of the best in control and comfort. Suzuki may very well become your one-stop shop for your outboard needs. Do yourself a favor: before you frustrate yourself looking at what the other guys offer, make Suzuki your first check-in. You'll thank yourself later when you're enjoying a memorable day on the water, powered by the reliability and amazing performance of a Suzuki. For more information visit www.suzukimarine.com.
