What You Need To Know

It’s called a Classic and with the traditional layout, the name truly fits. But even though it may look similar to past pontoon models from SunChaser, there are a lot of great upgrades. It just goes to show you can always improve on a classic.

The Highlights

One of the optional packages included on this test model is the Touring package that gives you nice pillow-back seats that instantly provide comfort and a high-end look. In the bow are two nice bench seats with the starboard side having a slight recline for a chaise lounge. Back in the stern the traditional L-shaped bench seating provides a lot of great storage below and worth noting are the recessed cupholders that can be found throughout. There’s at least a baker’s dozen cupholders onboard, which is basically one per person that this ‘toon is rated for.

The teak-looking vinyl deck is an upgrade, but a worthwhile one in our opinion since it helps make cleanup easier, plus it holds up better and looks more nautical than marine-grade carpet.

At the raised helm stand the dash console is loaded with gauges and rocker switches for a symmetrical design and besides the Infinity Bluetooth stereo, there are also USB and MP3 ports, along with a 12-volt receptacle. For the captain the helm chair slides, swivels and reclines and the throttle is in a great position.

There is a lot extra space with this layout, including plenty of room to walk around behind the helm seat. Just outside the rear gate is a good-sized swim platform with just enough room to towel off before coming inside the gates. Included in the stern is a three-step fixed ladder with handholds at the top, as well as a massive stainless steel ski/tow bar that looks like a work of art.

One other amenity worth noting: there is a pop-up changing room built into the back of the rear bench seat that stands over 5 feet tall when open and is a great example of a space-saving amenity.

Inspection Notes

There are three 25-inch diameter pontoons with the center PTS tube in place for added flotation and improved performance. The package includes a full-length aluminum performance shield as well as lifting strakes.

Up top there are three gates and all have excellent pinch protection for the hinges. Another safety item we like to check is the rail height around the perimeter. On this particular model the majority of the boat has a 28-inch tall rail with the bow being just an inch shorter for a very family-friendly design.

Performance Evaluation

With the Yamaha 150 we reached a top speed in the mid 30s and worth noting is just how quickly we were able to go from zero to 20 miles per hour. In just over five seconds this pontoon gets up on plane and is ready for action. She handles well in the flat turns and for a price-point boat performed very well.

Our Take

She’s a classic alright and that’s what we like about it. With the added optional packages you really get a solid pontoon as tested. It’s not an entry-level model; there are way too many great amenities and features to put it in that category. We consider it to be a great all-around pontoon and a good price point that performs well and is fun to drive. This Classic is clearly worthy of a closer look.

Why we love this boat…While the layout may appear traditional at first glance, with all the upgraded features this pontoon truly is an improved version from what you may be used to.

Just being picky…One example of space not being fully used is the port bench seat that could easily extend to the gate supports, but for the most part we love the open feel.
