Ice Mule Portable Soft Cooler: PDB TESTED No. 179

October 2015 PDB Tested Roy Sparks

Soft coolers have been an ideal match for boaters over the years, especially with pontoon owners who don’t like having a hard cooler banging around under the helm console or sliding across the floor. But to say the Ice Mule is just another great soft cooler would be selling it short.

What makes it unique is that the walls are inflatable. You simply blow into the port on the side to adjust and this layer of air becomes your wall insulation. Because it’s based on the dry bag concept with welded seams (not sewn and it doesn’t have a zipper), it’s leak-proof and with the shoulder straps it’s easy to carry. Side note: we also discovered with enough air the Ice Mule even floats!

The medium (15L) version retails for $59.95, but we’d recommend going with a larger size. Once we put a little air into it we didn’t have nearly the amount of space we thought we would. We love the concept and the design so we’re confident that one of the larger sizes the company offers would make it a great fit for boaters.
