Always A Soldier

June 2016 Brady L. Kay

Years ago, Command Sergeant Major Joseph Himelick told Bob Blum something that has stayed with him his whole life.

“I always thought of him as a real life John Wayne and he told me that once you’re a soldier you’re always a soldier. Even though it’s been over 20 years now since I was in the Army, I still believe it,” says Bob, who as a corporal was honorably discharged at the conclusion of his commitment. “In everyday life with the details and structure you carry it with you.”

Most weekends you’ll find Bob at the lake with his family on his Qwest 824 Lanai Bar pontoon that is powered with a Suzuki 175hp four-stroke. This privilege is something he doesn’t take lightly after seeing first-hand the sacrifices made by those in our armed forces.

“I’m proud, not just of the soldiers and their sacrifices, but for those who came before me,” explains Bob. “On Memorial Day weekend when everyone is up at the lake having a picnic and enjoying being free, we should remember that freedom came at a cost.”
