The Mighty Pontoon

January 2017

What is the perfect boat? Can there even BE a perfect boat? Everyone has different tastes after all, and what’s good for one person might be just [okay] for someone else. Sometimes, though, something will come along that’s just unconventional enough to make you notice it, something that you might not normally notice right off. This past fall, we had the extreme pleasure of encountering just such a boat: the Qwest LS 818 Lanai Cruise.

This is one of the coziest boats we’ve ever been on. At a mere 18 feet long, it’s not winning any size competitions, but rather than being a negative, we think its diminutive stature works in its favor. Qwest makes some of the highest-quality pontoons on the market. They say that working within constraints yields the best results, and we think that the smaller canvas Qwest had to work with made them really come up with something special. In fact, for a lot of people, the smaller footprint could be a boon, especially for a first-time owner, since it handles really well and fits easily onto a trailer; its dry weight is only 1,800 pounds, so you could practically pull it around with a Prius! (Don’t actually try that.)
