4 Boating Season Safety Essentials

March 2020 Feature

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) reported 4,145 accidents that involved 633 deaths, 2,511 injuries and approximately $46 million of damage to property as a result of recreational boating accidents in 2018. In honor of National Safe Boating Week (May 16-22), here are four essentials to ensure a safe and fun boating season:

Life jackets – This may seem like an obvious one, but it can be easy to forget life jackets, especially for frequent boaters. In fatal boating accidents in 2018, 84% of victims who drowned were not wearing a life jacket. Pro tip: Keep enough life jackets on board for the max passenger capacity, so you are never without enough for everyone.

Marine fire extinguisher – Be prepared for any possibility on the water! Always have a fire extinguisher on board and know how to use it. For a portable, easy-to-use option, the First Alert Marine Fire Extinguisher is rechargeable and USCG-approved. A first aid kit, flashlight and extra rope are also good items to keep on-hand.

Designated driver – Alcohol use is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents, according to the USCG. Due to sun exposure and heat, people are likely to become impaired more quickly when on the water. Play it safe and avoid alcohol when boating.

Boat cover – While it certainly helps keep your boat clean, covers can also play an important role in boating safety. Unwanted leaves and debris can become dangerous if accumulated near the engine, potentially causing damage or flooding. The variety of boat covers by Classic Accessories, the leading manufacturer of high quality, benefit-rich protective covers, offer premium protection at affordable prices, with a wide variety of models to best fit your boat.
