Nothing gets your heart pounding like a good boat race. Just ask John Odom of Marty’s Marine in Osage Beach, Mo. He and the rest of the Marty’s Marine crew participated in the Powerboat Racing in the 2020 Lake Of The Ozarks Shootout and they killed it with their PlayCraft models.

As one of the largest unsanctioned boat races in the US, it’s hailed as one of the “must-see” boating events and it took place the last weekend of August this year. Needless to say, spirits were high thanks to the excitement of an electric atmosphere.

“There were hundreds of thousands of people there watching,” described Odom. “They said it was a record year.”

It’s little wonder with the hundreds of boats gathered there to race. As for Marty’s Marine, they brought two PlayCraft models with twin engines and one Barletta. However, they weren’t the only ones to bring PlayCrafts to the race since Jim Dorris, the owner and president of PlayCraft, brought two boats as well: a PlayCraft and a Hampton which is built by PlayCraft.

For the pontoon segments, Odom explained they made three runs each. Odom raced one of their PlayCraft models, a 30- by 8.5-foot model with twin 450 horsepower Mercury engines. With this sporty model powered by a whopping 900 horsepower, Odom took first place as the Top Gun Pontoon in the Manufacturer’s Class at 79 miles per hour.

As for the other PlayCraft model from Marty’s Marine, it was captained by Philip Pfundstein. This 30- by 10-foot Powertoon X-Treme was also powered by twin 450 Mercury engines, and Pfundstein won in the Amateur Class at 80 miles per hour.

Then 21-year-old Katelyn Merritt, another employee of Marty’s Marine, raced their Barletta. The model was a new L25QCSS with a single 450 Mercury engine on the back. She got up to 59 miles per hour, and she ended up having a total blast.

As for Jim Dorris of PlayCraft, his wife raced their Hampton model in the Manufacturer’s Class and ended up running 79 miles per hour. Then Dorris himself captained the 27- by 8.5-foot standard Powertoon X-Treme with a single 450 Mercury engine, winning the Professional Class at 67 miles per hour.

There was plenty of glory to be had that weekend, and with a total of three PlayCrafts on the water, every single one of these models took home gold which speaks volumes about these boats’ performance. It’s a safe bet to say that Marty’s Marine and PlayCraft Boats had a great time at the 2020 Lake Of The Ozarks Shootout Powerboat Race and will be back again next year to defend their titles.
