Battery Sugestions Needed

Hey guys,

Due to medical issues, I need to convert my pontoon trailer's winch to an electric version.

My thoughts are to mount a battery on the trailer in lieu of running the heavy wiring through my truck. The battery will go into a box and I am thinking about adding a solar panel to keep it charged.

What size battery and solar panel would work?

I'd go with a group 24 dual purpose battery Dan, I think I'd also tap in to trailer light harness and let the tow vehicle top off the battery. Using the battery to pull the boat up on the trailer is not going to run it way down so all you have to do is maintain the charge. According to etrailer.com the #4 pin (constant 12v) on your 7 pin plug run thru a piece of 10g wire will maintain the charge on a dump trailer battery, so I would think that same circuit would work for you here.

Hey Dan. Larry's suggestion is right on, however I'd run a second wire for a good ground.

Not sure that the ground through the trailer ball is always the best if your pulling a heavy amp load like trailer winch.

Just a thought.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your suggestions. Hooking it up to the power in the plug seems to make good sense.
