Water Impeller

Has anyone replaced their Water Impeller on a Yamaha outboard, is it in the shaft or on the engine ? I don't have the manual. Is it something you can do yourself ?

It's about a 4 to 5 on the difficulty scale. You have to figure out how to disconnect the shifting linkage on your model and then drop the lower unit off the engine. The pump is on the top of the lower unit. I recommend getting the rebuild kit on Yamaha and Mercury outboards, the plastic housings warp and don't seal well going back together. Go to the boats.net sight and look your model up on the parts lists. Look at the parts blow up for your lower and you can get a good idea of what is involved. When you put it back together slide the impeller down the shaft and on to the key, put a little grease or water with Dawn in to to lube it up. then slide the housing down to the impeller and turn the shaft clockwise as the housing slides down over the impeller. Make sure all the gaskets are down on the appropriate surface, the top one likes to get trapped between the housing and the base.
