Thread: Rub rail / playpen

    Default Rub rail / playpen

Have a question, why do you think most pontoon manufactures mount the playpen rails flush of pretty close to flush with boats rub rail. If they would set it in a 1" all around it would save a lot of playpen inci(dents).

The rub rails on my 1994 Party Cruiser are the widest point of the boat. To be otherwise would be poor engineering.

I got over my dents by using bigger bumpers.

Generally the boats of today, (with only a few exceptions - and some older used 'toons) are 8 1/2 feet wide to comply with most states tow laws.

If the Manf. is going to do 8 1/2' overall width, they want to provide the maximum playpen width which means mounting the pen as close
to the edge as possible. Is it smart to do this ? Yes, because you are buying as much usability as possible.

I think Malcolm is right about the fenders. We use Taylormade 5 1/2" diameter and would have gone for their 8 1/2" except that our
dock slip is only 10 feet wide. So not being a math major, 120" wide slip minus 102" wide boat doesn't leave much wiggle room for 17" of fenders.

Another reason why we decided to go with a stand alone vertical lift - and that is even a tight fit.

My rub rails are about 1-1/4" out further than the playpen/body.

I would gladly take 1 1/4" , no dents yet except from when my bonnet unscrewed from my polisher and left a whole shot. My lift with guide poles leaves me about 3/4" clearance OA which is fine just have to be careful of bimini top and structure as it can catch top i-beam hardware.
