There are 29 club sports at Nevada. Perhaps the most interesting - in name and in focus - is the Cast and Blast Outdoors Club.

The group, founded in 2002, is a fishing and hunting club. Hence the "cast" and "blast." But its larger goal is to raise money and dedicate volunteer hours for local wildlife conservation and habitat rehabilitation.

"We don't necessarily compete like your typical club," Cast and Blast president Ben Brower said. "There's really nothing to compete for. Instead, our goal is to preserve the wildlife and ecosystem in our region."

Brower said the 35-member club logs between 200-300 volunteer hours per academic year. The highlight of this year's activities was an antelope capture with the Nevada Department of Wildlife last January in Elko.

Using helicopters and suburbans, eight Cast and Blast members helped NDOW capture and check the health of 100 antelopes, which were relocated to the Yakima Valley in Washington.

"They were Johnny on the Spot to volunteer," NDOW big game biologist Mike Cox said. "It's really cool that they started this operation, and our antelope capture was right up their alley."
