Who's Who?

A complete listing of the top builders

Published in the January 2014 Issue January 2014 Feature PDB Staff Report

Ten years ago, our Buyer's Guide issue was filled with three manufacturers to a page and it went on and on. A lot of those companies aren't in business today, which is what a recession does. It eliminates the weaker competition and the ones that are still standing have proven they have what it takes to deliver on the customer's expectations. Any one of these companies make a boat that you would be proud to own but it's up to you to decide which is the best fit for you and your family.

Buying a boat can be complex and involves time and research. No one would expect someone to drop tens of thousands of dollars on a boat that wasn't well built. It's too much money to not get exactly what you're looking for. So if you're in the market for a new vessel, take the time to get to know the company behind the product.

In our January 2014 Buyer's Guide issue, you'll find what sets them apart, how many models they produce and what social media outlets you can find them on to further your research. Below is a list of all the boats you can find in our Buyer's Guide issue, and a slideshow of all the boats we've featured:

For the sixth year in a row, Avalon took home an NMMA CSI Award in 2013 for outstanding customer service and has one of the lowest incidences of warranty claims in the industry. One of the reasons its warranty claims are so low is because the manufacturer is a vertically integrated builder, which means they make everything—pontoons, framing, furniture and more—right in their Michigan plant. This allows the company to have a higher degree of control over the production and quality of every product they build. Avalon knows their employees are some of the best in the business and credits their work force for their amazing record of high performance. For over 40 years they have been producing some of the finest U.S.A. manufactured pontoon boats and it’s only going to get better.

Carolina Skiff

Waycross, Ga.

800-422-7282

www.carolinaskiff.com

Carolina Skiff spent five years developing the Fun Chaser pontoon and it was proudly released in 2013. It’s revolutionary line of fiberglass deck and pontoon boats will forever change the definition of how you look at a fiberglass boat.

The name proves to be a dead giveaway. It’s all about fun. The Fun Chaser brings people together on the water in an innovative boat design that combines the wide-open social space of a pontoon and the performance ride of a runabout. The Fun Chaser line is offered in two configurations: the Deck boat series (DS), which features a mono V-style hull and the Pontoon boat series (PS) that is built on twin hulls. Each series is available in fishing and cruising models in varying lengths from 19 to 25 feet.

One thing that sets Fun Chaser pontoons apart is the construction. The boats are built from all-composite fiberglass, including the pontoon lineup. This eliminates aluminum pontoon hulls. Each is finished with polished high-grade stainless steel trim, making them suitable for both freshwater and saltwater. Constructing pontoon hulls from fiberglass instead of aluminum offers tremendous advantages including supreme corrosion resistance, a smooth ride and greatly enhanced storage capacity.

What sets this company apart:

“Family, fun and fishing all in one—that’s the concept behind Fun Chaser. Think of these boats as your family’s own recreation or living room on the water. From pleasure cruising and tubing to skiing and fishing, these boats are perfect for virtually any on-the-water activity. By producing the Pontoon Series with all-fiberglass pontoons, we’ve now opened up this category of boats to the saltwater market.” --Joe Kirkland, President and CEO of Carolina Skiff

Larson may be new to the pontoon world but their story comes back more than a century. That’s right, over a 100 years ago in rural Little Falls, Minn., an 11-year-old Paul Larson, the son of poor Swedish immigrants, built his first boat. By 1913, 19-year-old Larson built a duck hunting boat and with the money he earned from trapping animals started his business and the legacy began.

The Larson Boat Group decided to celebrate its 100th anniversary by jumping into a new market with the release of its Escape line of pontoon boats. New to the market for 2014, you won’t be disappointed. Larson has used its fiberglass background to completely rethink the pontoon and this line has a very futuristic look, which will attract a lot of attention. Make sure you check it out at an upcoming boat show.

You can’t talk about Manitou without talking about its V-Toon Technology. The V-Toon design was engineered to optimize performance beginning with the size and position of its center tube. With precise positioning, in combination with strategically engineered and placed positive angle lifting strakes, the center tube helps create the exact degree of deadrise and water displacement needed to simulate a standard V-hull.

The Oasis series comes standard with a multitude of features, such as a walk-around transom and redesigned wall panels. Two new floor plans give you the option of having a split rear seating group with a center walkway, or a center seating group with picnic seating that converts to a spacious lounger. The best thing about the Oasis is you'll be living large without spending large.

What sets this company apart:

Montego Bay Pontoons

Gillet, Wis.

920-855-2168

www.montegobaypontoons.com

info@mirrocraft.com

The 2013 season marked the first year in the pontoon business for Montego Bay Pontoons. But there is a lot of experience behind the pontoon line because of its parent company, MirroCraft.

MirroCraft first began production of aluminum boats in 1956. These quality boats were designed for recreational fishing and pleasure. In 2012, the management team purchased the business from its parent corporation and the company became an employee-owned venture with the goal of breaking into the pontoon market.

The team set out to design an entry- to mid-level boat that would appeal to a wider base of consumers. The entire lineup of pontoons retails brand-new for under $15K and the boats come in either cruise or fishing versions. No matter which you pick, you will get a safe and stable boat. Montego Bay pontoons are a great value boat for a growing family.

What sets this company apart:

“Our first pontoon was delivered in November of 2012 and we introduced all of our models with an 8.5-foot wide beam, including our 16- and 18-foot models. This is unique in the industry and gives the entry-level consumer added space compared to our competition. These models also come with a bolted deck, not screwed and rear-entry.” –Tim Allen, Vice President of Sales

PlayCraft

Richland, Mo.

www.playcraftboats.com

PlayCraft was the beginning of performance pontoons. Even today, these boats are built with speed in mind. A top priority is for its customers to throw limitation out the window and take a thrilling adventure every time they’re on one of its boats.

Many of the company’s most thrilling advances in speed and handling come standard on the PowerToon Xtreme like the Triple Toon Package, RAC-R-FINS and a surface piercing nosecone on each pontoon. PlayCraft got everyone’s attention when it built a pontoon that reached 100 mph on the water. One of the reasons they were able to reach this speed is because they have always stuck to their original philosophy of only using the best products available. This is the perfect boat to take advantage of riding on a ‘toon that was built for speed. Every boat is built with plush sofas, plenty of storage and a sleek control console paired with an overstuffed reclining captain's chair. What’s not to love?

“We were the first to develop performance pontoons in the early 90s, and will continue to be innovative in developing better and faster performance pontoons for the marketplace. That’s why SouthWind uses only the latest, strongest composite materials available. Not only are SouthWind hulls and decks wood-free, but all seating and storage areas are as well.

SouthWind Boats is operated by Seminole Marine Group, the long-time builders of the Sailfish line of saltwater fishing boats. Each SouthWind boat is assembled top to bottom in a 155,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility in Cairo, Ga.  Seminole Marine Group's highly experienced team applies its over 27 years of proven boat building experience to each detail, delivering a truly premium line of Sport Decks and Hybrids.

Each SouthWind is powered by highly efficient outboard motors known for  reliability, ease of ownership, low cost of maintenance and ease of winterization. Dependable four-stroke outboards and direct injected technology also have better power to weight ratios and draft less water than stern drives or inboards, making them safer to operate, more economical to maintain, and dramatically quieter while operating.

Veranda

Hot Springs, Ark.

www.verandamarine.com

info@verandamarine.com

One of the biggest selling points for Veranda Marine is its commitment to wood-free construction. The company is committed to staying innovative with a great example of that being its patented all-aluminum, all-welded deck construction.

Veranda's construction processes are truly revolutionary. The Arkansas-based company uses an all-aluminum, all welded deck and tube system, which creates a solid foundation while providing a quiet, fuel efficient ride time and time again. Veranda's tubes are made from .080 to .100 gauge aluminum and each is chambered and pressure tested for safety. After that, the tube is welded to a full-length M-Deck bracket, which completely eliminates any chance of flexing or twisting while riding over rough water. At that point, the M-Deck brackets are welded directly to Veranda’s aluminum, interlocking deck. Put all of this together and you get a pontoon that your family will enjoy for many, many years.

What sets this company apart:

“The most innovative thing we’ve contributed to the pontoon industry is our patented wood-free construction because it’s the best you’ll find when it comes to durability and performance. We don’t use any wood in our boats, so you will never have rot and warped decks. The Veranda aluminum deck system is solid, quiet and built to last a lifetime.” –Nathan Kyser, Veranda Marine
